    Tattoo?

So ive been reading the gospels of Luke and John and they have been comforting me and giving me such insight with Jesus. theres some stuff Jesus quoted that I like.

I wanna get a tattoo but in leviticus it clearly states: “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD”

but what if its something Jesus preached then would it be okay or would it still be a sin?

    thank you !

~ God bless all of you

The verse you quoted was an instruction for God's people back when they were in the midst of Pagans and idolaters who practiced those things are part of their religion. God's people were not to allow themselves to associate by word or deed with those people.

What you do to your body should, in some way, serve the Lord. Search your heart and mind, determine why you want to do what you want to do. Will it serve God's purpose? Will it go against God's purpose? Is it to serve you or God?

Let your true knowledge of the content of your heart help you decide. Prayer helps.

    Re: Tattoo?

I don't have a tattoo and certainly am not going to get one, but my decison has absolutely nothing to do with the book of Leviticus. It's a personal preference.

The Apostle Paul said that if you are going to bind yourself to the one aspect of the Law, then you are going to have to obey all it.

So, if you are going to allow the Leviticus verse about not associating yourself with pagan practices guide your decision about personal tattoos, then tell me:
    • Do you perform animal sacrifices to the Lord?
    • Do you burn your daughters and stone to death your sons when they are rebellious?
    • If you are a man, are you abstaining from cutting part of your hair forever?
    • If you are a woman, do you purposely not touch anything that your family will be touching while having your menstral cycle?

Yes, things like murder, incest, stealing, injustice, lying, adultery, and more are STILL sins, but NOT because they are in the Law. They are still sins because they were sins BEFORE the Law - from the beginning actually - and abstaining from them shows our image which is God's image.

The Law was fulfilled by Christ. He was the only one who could do that.

    Read the book of Galatians.

Through the Law we become aware of sin and the Law is the schoolmaster that brings us to Christ. Without Christ, I' be condemned by Leviticus 19 alone. I have quite a few tattoos, and since I became aware of the Law I haven't got another.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,

I have several tattoos. All of them I got in my youthful days. Though I've not gotten another one since becoming a Christian, I don't see anything wrong with anyone getting one. It's an expensive hobby.

Jeremy, I think that verse is refering to tattooing for pegan worship practices. But, there are other verses to consider that talk about our bodies being a temple. You have to ask yourself if you think that God would want you to put marks on His temple. You also have to ask yourself what the purpose is of you getting a tattoo, is it to draw attention to yourself or fit in with the crowd? Those would not be good reasons. But, the most important thing that you need to ask is are you convinced, without a doubt, that God is okay with it. If you are not sure or deep down you think it might be wrong then don't do it. If you go against your conscience then you sin. Never violate your conscience.

Not putting ink into the skin was a law under the old covenant which we are no longer obligated to follow. Now as to you getting a tattoo or not, the question is, why are you desiring to get one? Is this tattoo going to portray Jesus, teach the Word to whoever sees it, will this tattoo help others, or help others to reflect on Jesus or His Kingdom? Or is this tattoo something you want, something you desire to have for self ? That is what will decide if it is sinful for you or no. Let every person judge in themselves whether it is right or not to get a tattoo, and let no other judge another on this matter, Everyone will stand and answer for themselves before Jesus Christ on Judgment Day. It matters not what i think or what others think, but what is the Spirit telling you concerning this? Also, if anyone has any doubts about anything at all, it is better not to do it at all, if you are having doubts about it. If you don't know if it is sinful or not to get a tattoo, then it is best to stay clear of it altogether, because of the doubt that you have concerning it. Doubt is not faith. If you don't think eating meat is a good thing, then for you to do so is sinful, even though it is not a sin for others to eat meat, which have no doubts about it.

In His Holy and Precious Name, Jesus Christ
