This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel.

God does not need a vehicle to move. The Book of Ezekiel prophesies concerning God and His glory leaving Solomon’s Temple due to Judah’s sins, and later, that the New Temple that will be built in the Millennium that Jesus Christ in all His glory will occupy. In Ezeliel Judah’s captivity is nigh and God predicts through Ezekiel how he will make an elegant retreat from a nation who had all His favor but worshiped other god’s and their filthy practices.
There is much dispute about the “living Creatures” but the evidence of scripture is that whenever God judges, He uses these creatures. They are also called Cherubim. They were to be used three times.
1. At the gate of Eden after man is judged and banished from the Garden and the Tree of Life
2. When God withdraws from idolatrous Judah and their Temple
3. At the beginning of the Great tribulation in Revelation chapter 4.
Each of these three judgments are similar. In Eden ALL men are banned from the Tree of Life and the Garden of Pleasure. In Ezekiel God’s chosen nation have rejected Him and embraced demons by their idolatry (1st Cor.10:20-21; Rev.9:20). God’s habitation among ALL men is about to be dissolved. (Note that after the Temple was gone and until the completion of the second Temple, God is only referred to as “God of Heaven”, not “God of the Heavens and Earth”). In Revelation ALL nations, including Israel, will be judged by the Great Tribulation. The difference between the first two and the last is that the first two only pertained to the earth. Eden and man were a matter of the earth. Judah’s judgment was a matter of the earth because Israel is an earthly nation occupying a piece of the earth. But in Revelation both heaven and earth are judged because of Satan’s rebellion (Rev.12:7).
Wings are for the air and wheels are for the earth. The Cherubim (four living creatures) have wings for flying, showing that they are heavenly in nature. Because Judah’s impending disaster only pertains to the earth the creatures use wheels. In Revelation they only have wings, no wheels.
Ezekiel wasn't describing a physical object anyway.
Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it on the islands from afar, and say, "He Who scattered Israel will gather them together and watch them as a shepherd his flock."
Jeremiah 31:9
Difficult to describe the majesty and holiness of God in human terms.
Unhappy is he who mistakes the branch for the tree, the shadow for the substance.
God would like to make His behavior understandable to humans as long as He shows up to humans, especially ancient humans. If He suddenly appears here and there people may be scared. So He took a human form and use vehicle carried by the angels such that humans at that time udnerstood His behavior. It's kind of visual expression or visual communication.
It is also said that Jesus Christ will be riding a white horse when He returns.
we know the apostles liked japanese cars.
the bible says they were all of one accord
When God was describing how to build the things of the Tabernacle they were mere shadows (of understanding) of what is in Heaven. I believe what Ezekiel saw was the Throne of God. Just as the Ark of the Covenant had staves to carry it with four Levites to carry it, so too is this picture/parable of God's Throne, it has four cherubim carrying it. Now these beings had to be quite a specticle. Four wings, four heads, wheels withing wheels with their spirit inside, oh and eyes all over the wheels. Wow.
Just imagine trying to describe something spiritual that has no earthly explaination. As Paul said we see now dimly as thru a darkened glass, but one day we will see perfectly.
I used to wonder about this one miracle Jesus performed. He healed a blind man. But this man at first saw people as tree's. Then Jesus healed him again, and he then saw perfectly. Thinking on it now, perhaps it was because Jesus wanted us to understand that it isnt just our eyes that need opened, but our understanding as well.
"Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!"
~Matthew 12:50~
I believe Revelation talks about coming "on the clouds"...so while it's doubtful the Almighty needs a vehicle, perhaps He likes to make an entrance...and you'll have to admit, cloud surfing would be pretty cool (and awe inspiring).
