I went to a 4th of July fireworks show in Washington D.C. 95' or 96'. I could not believe the amount of people that crammed into that park to watch the display. The show was spectacular. But having to walk out of the park and get to the tram wasn't fun. We got to our car, which I believe was parked on G Street. I swear we were no more than 30-35 yards from the freeway onramp (although my memory could be a bit foggy on that). We spent 2 1/2 hours getting out of our space, getting to the on ramp then finally on the freeway. The trip from Raleigh, N.C. to D.C., IIRC, took a little over 4 1/2 hrs. It took 8 to get back. Add to that that my friend and I had food poisoning from bad fish we ate at the Old Post Office/Food Court, it was miserable.

When we got back, I told my friend, "if you ever mention D.C. and fireworks show in the same sentence again, I will punch you square between the eyes."

All I know, I will never do that again.

Yeah, I've been in similar scenes in California. These days I'll only go if I can walk to and from and even then I'm pretty wary.

My son and I attended a big fireworks display, years ago, where clouds stormed in and the wind shifted, blowing these big aerial bombs on the crowd.

I enjoy the parade much more, especially with the horses and young people's marching bands etc.

They did not do much in the way of fireworks here: too dry. They did not want to start the whole Midwest on fire.
