Aren't there ex-Muslims who will vouch for the reality and accuracy of this type of strategy by proponents of Islam or are we all just being Islamophobes and bigots?

You could check out the work of Ibn-Warraq. He is the founder of ISIS. He provides a rational discourse on Islamic militancy. However, unlike reading some of the posts on this thread, you won't get the impression that all the Muslims are involved in some coherent plan - that part simply isn't accurate.

Unfortunately it seems that apart from the entire nation turning back to God,hethe only way to beat this is to become the very thing we hate. Oppressive...and they know we won't do that.

Turning to an oppressive society to "beat this" doesn't solve anything, it's like solving the bleeding in your leg by cutting off your leg. Either we want to be free or we don't.

I think in many ways the threat of Sharia is overstated, simply because Muslims aren't a single amorphous mass who all think alike. The divisions between Shia and Sunni Muslims makes the divisions between Protestants and Catholics look truly amicable. It's hard to see Shia Muslims tolerating a Sharia system set up by Sunnis, for example.

Or almost any muslims in the west tolerating the draconian punishments that often accompany it.

Also, the Muslims who want to set up their own sharia courts are trying to find ways of resolving disputes among themselves and enforcing sharia law among themselves.
Sort of like church discipline or settling disputes with other christians out of court. Not something they are trying to impose on everyone else.
