    Recommended Movies

I recently watched a Christian movie called, "A Home Beyond the Sun," and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Though there are no big Hollywood actors in it, it's based on an amazing true story that demonstrates the power of God to change lives, and the awesome way people and events are interwoven into the tapestry of life--all to bring about what God has ordained to be so. It's currently available for instant viewing on Netflix, but is truly well worth renting, if you can find it.

When we stand before the Judgment Seat, we will have retained only two things from our earthly life: what God gave us, and what we did with what He gave us.

Another great Christian movie: "Fireproof." Starring Kirk Cameron, it's the inspiring story of a marriage on the rocks saved by God's influence.

I liked "The Robe" about the centurion in charge of Christ's crucifixion and how it affected him. Oldie but goodie.

Yep, "The Robe" is a classic. Along with "The Greatest Story Ever told," "The Bible,"and a few others. But I suppose the king of classics would probably be "The Ten Commandments." I always loved that one.

You know, it's significant that most of these great Bible-based movies ceased to be popular in the mid-60's-- about the same time a pervasive spiritual darkness and of ungodliness swept across America--bringing restrictions against prayer, rebellion among youth, drugs abuse, "the New Morality," an interest in the occult, Eastern religions, spirit "channeling," etc. Satan couldn't influence people while God's influence was in the way.

Although there have actually been a few good made-for-television movies based on the Bible made over the last 10 years or so. A few I remember are: "Abraham," "Peter and Paul," Jacob and Esau," and "The Story of Ruth." They're all pretty good, if you get a chance to see them.

I really liked a movie I watched recently called "The Fifth Quarter." It's a poignant and inspiring true story. If you get emotional watching movies, keep a tissue handy.

I recommend "The Encounter" and the "Visual Bible: Matthew" with Bruce Marchiano. I have seen others on Daystar TV that were good.

Heh. Watching the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur and the like, it's amazing how overacted they were ("Oh Moses! Moses!"). I know it was the style from then, but I find them harder to watch.

Is this only for Christian movies? If not, if you have not seen it, see "Children of Men". There is violence and profanity (but not for it's own sake), but presents a view of a future world that has lost basically all hope. Some incredibly long and complex single cut scenes. I found it quite emotionally taxing.
It is only the cynic who claims “to speak the truth” at all times and in all places to all men in the same way, but who, in fact, displays nothing but a lifeless image of the truth… He dons the halo of the fanatical devotee of truth who can make no allowance for human weaknesses; but, in fact, he is destroying the living truth between men. He wounds shame, desecrates mystery, breaks confidence, betrays the community in which he lives, and laughs arrogantly at the devastation he has wrought and at the human weakness which “cannot bear the truth”. Yeah, there was a lot of corny over-acting back then. But the trade-off for better acting techniques today has been a steady increase in profanity, violence and nudity. Many directors intentionally add such gratuitous garbage just to get an "R" rating, because they think it makes more money. Yet, if you look at box office successes like "Titanic," "Passion of the Christ," and now the "Dark Knight" franchise, that's clearly not always the case. (Although some of the content in PG-13 movies today often seem more deserving of an "R.")

Well, while I didn't specify Christian movies only, it seems unwise to recommend movies in a Christian forum that are of a clearly unsavory nature and not deemed appropriate for the whole family. Recommendation is however, left to the individual's wisdom and discretion.

Fair enough. Certainly "Children of Men" is not a kid's movie - but it is one of the better movies I have seen and, IMO, worthy of view.

In 1999, Jon Voight starred in a good movie about the days of Noah and the ark, called (not surprisingly) "Noah's Ark." That's another one I think is worth watching.
