Sorry for not updating very well. but here is the latest. He was in rehab for 2 weeks, and had lots of therapy done. And has done well. But still not quite there yet to be independent. He's using a walker most of the time. But therapy wanted him to have 24 hour supervision. My mom works 3 days a week, my grandma wouldn't be able to handle him, me and my brother have odd working hours that it wouldn't work for us to have him. So he is in a nursing home now until the surgery. There were not any nursing homes/swing beds open in our area for him so he wanted to be here where me and my bro live. There was one place that had a bed open. I haven't heard many good things about it from the other nurses/cna's/patients family members over the years I've worked at the hospital and was nervous. We got him there today. His bathroom smells like urine, very strong like it hasn't been cleaned for ages. He has a roommate (who's a very nice guy) and maybe he missed nad its smelling. I'm hoping thats it, that its not how it normally smells. We left when dad went to supper and when I came back to check on him afterwards, he did not like his meal. So I feel awful. I know we need to give it more time, but I felt awful having to leave him there with a smelly bathroom and not enjoying his meals. I'm hoping htat maybe it was just this meal. But we will see. My mom is under stress. Insurance will pay for 20 days and then we will be taking him out and having him at home until surgery which wont' be long afterwards. We can't afford to pay it out of our pockets. He will be having more therapy which is good. They have a new addition that seems very nice so he can go to the sitting area there with the tv and he seems to like it there. Will have to ask for a bigger wheel chair for him though. But could you please pray for his stay there that it will go well and he can get through it. I felt awful leaving him there. It really bugged me. i feel sorry for him. If the bathroom keeps smellig like that, I may just go ask a nurse what is going on in there because it should not smell like that.
Thanks for the update. And yes, praying for his temporary stay at the facility, and continued prayers for his eventual stay at home. Prayers for you and your Mom for strength and wisdom in this difficult circumstance.
Prayers for your Dad, asking for healing mercies, and deliverance from immediate suffering.
He still hates the food there (I guess others say the same thing too there), but I've been bringing him food for lunch during the week before I go to work and this weekend, he was strong enough to go out so saturday and today we went out and did some shopping (not too much buying, just looking around). I had the pickup to put his wheelchair in and went well. He enjoyed his outtings. Its a little break for him. Tuesday he has a dr appointment I guess nad its to check a spot on his nose to make sure its not cancerous so we have that on our minds now. HOpefully its nothing but we'll see. I guess he had it for a couple of years (none of us noticed it unfortunately and he never said anything til now) and thought it was a pimple. But he said it hasn't grown or changed either. So could you keep him in your prayers about that spot? And he has a dr appointment next tuesday with the diabeties dr and neurologist and then we decide when to have the shunt placed again. So hoping he will watch what he snacks on. I have given him money for hte pop machine but he's been spending it on the candy vending machine too. So now I just brought in a 12 pack of diet pop for them to have in the fridge for him to have. So no money for him so he can't eat too many sweets to get his sugar up. He still struggles on when to say no and walk away when it comes to candy. So this is the best we can do for him. He lost weight and we dont' want him to gain it all back. Because he just eats and eats and eats if its there for him. He has the biggest sweet tooth I've ever seen. I think I got it from him too. He's been doing good mostly. they have a very good therapy program that he enjoys. So thats something that makes him happy about there. And keeps him busy during the week.
Thank you for the update, Sweetie!
When our parents age it sometimes happens that the needed care is a hardship for the family. I am sorry you all are having to go through this, but its something many will face sometime down the road of life.
I am glad he's adjusting well to the place. I will continue to pray for him, for you, your brother and your Mom.
My favorite scripture: Malachi 3:16
"Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name!" (Every time we speak of the Lord, or even THINK of him--its written down in a book of remembrance!)
Yeah, I think we are getting a preview of what it will be like when we have to put him in one permanently if we have to. HE's very stubborn. But they moved him to a new room. His roommate he had would get up at 3-4 in the morning to go to the bathroom, well he never made it, would go on the bed, floor anywhere. So my dad could never get back to sleep so he ended up just getting up and going to the internet cafe place there to watch tv. So the nurses moved him to a different room so he could get better sleep. This one is bigger I guess and the bathroom hopefully doesn't smell. Thank you for the prayers. God is getting us through this, and I know that as hard as it is to have him there, its the best we can do for him now. Therapy is helping him so thats good.![]()
Well, the spots on his face were a form of skin cancer, they were on his nose and then they found some on his temple area on one side. So she froze them and they should start peeling off. He has another checkup in December for a follow up so I"m praying they did get it all. He was a farmer and was out in the sun a lot. So I guess its no surprise. but hopefully that's all. I guess my great grandma on my mother's side had it and wasn't bothered by again when they removed it. Hopefully they got it before it spread.
Still praying here for all of you. Do you know if the cancer they removed was malignant or benign?

Good question, I guess he didn't say and I didn't think to ask. I will ask when I see him today if he remembers them saying anything. We didn't know about the doctor appointment until the last minute so neither me or my mom were able to go due to work. Thanks for the prayers!![]()
You all remain in my prayers.![]()
I asked him today and he didnt know. She just sprayed this stuff on it to freeze it and it is peeling off. His nose is really red now due to it's peeling. But he has a followup in November with the doctor so we will see if it worked. Hopefully they got it all but we will see.
Tell your dad we are praying for him, Sweetie. We really are.
I'd say if they thought these were malignant they would have cut and cut deeply and far out from each spot. Its probably benign, I'm praying that it is.... Then, its nothing to worry about.

thanks!! I will let him know. And that is good to hear about his spots. He farmed his whole life and he said the first thing that would get burned from the sun was his nose which had a spot on it too (on the tip). We went out to eat again today and he got his hair cut. He doesn't look like shaggy the dog anymore (it's been awhile since his last hair cut). So we have his appointments with the diabeties doctor and neurologist on tuesday. So hoping that goes well. And his blood sugar will stay down. He wants big mac tomorrow for lunch but I'm going to try to talk him into something else. Like subway though he says he's tired of it. But oh well. He doesn't need greasy food all the time. And subway is the only place I can think of that isnt greasy or too bad anyways. and get him yogurt or fruit cup or baked chips instead of regular chips.
Had his appointment with the neurologist and diabeties doctor. He is scheduled for his surgery Oct. 17 to have the shunt placed again. So praying that this will go smoothly with no infections. They will do an external drain from what I understand first just to make sure the infection is cleared by checking his white blood cell count and go from there with the permanent shunt. He will be in the nursing home for 2 more weeks now though til surgery. Insurance has covered him now for another 2 weeks so this is good. He still needs it and isn't quite ready to be home yet. He doesn't like it there still lol but the therapy is very good there. He will backslide in all he has worked on if he goes home where he wont' get the 3 sessions a day every day. sometimes he sees that and sometimes he doesn't, depends on his moods. His reasoning/understanding have been affected from all this. The diabeties appointment was short. Just went through his sugars from manor care and switched the insulin doses and that was it.
He still grumbles about it to others. Says not so nice comments. we try to get him to stop but he gets upset so I don't know. Its just the food he doesn't like and he's not there permanently either, but he just doesn't see it that way. We keep reminding him that he will get to go home when he's recovered enough to do so. That this is just temporary.
Keeping you all in my prayers.![]()
