    Where To Start

Hey guys! I am the type of person that pretty much picks up the Bible, reads a verse, and I'm done for the day. I really want to study the Bible and take notes, but I just don't know where to start or what to read?
I have this longing to learn more about the Bible, I just need to start off somewhere. Any advice would be great!

    Re: Where To Start

My advice from personal experience is start with the gospel of John, then read the other three gospels. That will help you get to know more about Jesus. From there, you can read the rest of the New Testament and then on to Genesis and the Old Testament.

I had a wonderful mentor when I first became a Christian and she taught me a saying that helped me tremendously:
The New is in the Old contained,
The Old is by the New explained.

    Happy journey!

    I like this idea also
    Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

You are very, very welcome. And I meant it - you are about to embark on a great journey that has no end. I've been reading and studying the bible for slightly over 40 years. With each reading comes a new/deeper meaning than the last time.

God love us and continually reveals more of Himself to us as we draw near.

    Re: Where To Start

I started reading and studying the bible after accepting Christ as my personal savior back in 1954..and started with reading the gospels. Found over the years that a good way of daily reading is to choose a chapter from the gospels of Matthew, Luke, John, or Mark, one Psalm, and one of the letters of Paul, John, or others. Also helps to get the picture of the early Christians to sometime read one chapter a day from the Acts of the Apostles (right after the gospels).

For four years I have followed the bible in a year plan where you go through the entire bible using a designated plan. I wouldn't recommend this until you have read the bible for many years. But it works just fine for me now.

It's a great challenge and the application of what you read will change your life.

    Enjoy!
"The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
    is heard in our land
    ." SofS 2:12 (RSV)

My personal favorite is the Gospel of Matthew. I always recommend people start there, but there are many good places to start. You could just roll a 66-sided die
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
