It may not have anything to do with it. For what its worth, I went from flaming liberal to conservative about 20 years before I became a Christian. To be sure I didn't care so much about typical Christian hot-button topics like the homosexual agenda or abortion. But on other things, economy, government intrusion and regulation, socialism, etc. was mainly a matter of studying history and cutting through a lot of rubbish.
