    Legal Size Paper

    Question please.

Im using a non-familiar paper size but is a standard size in North America. My question is this: Does the typical U.S. person carry stock of legal-size paper (8.5 × 14 inches; 215.9 × 355.6 mm) or is it only found in legal offices?

The reason for my question is that I need an extra-length paper for producing long Bible charts. But they are not much use if people cant be bothered printing, if they don't stock paper at home.

Is this a practical size to work with?

Even at work, we seldom use legal (8.5" x 14") size. 99.5% of the time what we use is standard letter (8.5" x 11") size.

So I'd say, No. It's not that practical to work with.

I have some, but I very seldom use it and most people I know of don't have any.
the only reason I have some is because i wanted to print a pdf that was that size.

I wish it was used more often, I like the dimensions and I can see why you would want to use it. But you can't count on most people having it.

If you can use Letter people (8.5 x 11" IIRC) the advantage is that in areas where similar sizes are used people can still print easily enough. Here in the UK we use A4 which is 210x297mm - not quite the same as Letter but close enough that most printers will regard the two as freely interchangeable. If you've used Legal paper I wouldn't even attempt to print it, as I'm not aware of anything that size being available in the UK at all.

The only time I ever tried to deal with Legal paper was when dealing with a lawyer in the US who sent some documents electronically, formatted for Legal paper. Before printing them I had to repaginate them to fit on A4. I'd love to know what he thought when he received them printed on a paper size that didn't quite match anything else in his office.

Thanks for the comments. OK, I guess Ill have to re-design with Letter/A4 even though most home printers can accept legal if people happened to use it. Apparently not.

Actually, I get paper especially cut, turn it to 'landscape' and print chronological charts of about a century per sheet of paper. It makes timelines so much easier to follow.

Never mind. Im glad I asked though. So thanks.

They have places named Corporate Express in New Zealand that should carry all types of paper usually used in offices including "legal paper" ( 8.5 " x 14")
I'm not sure about New Zealand but here in America all kinds of places use paper of that size (Not just legal offices use it )

You can pick up reams of that size in office supply stores all over North America and I'm pretty positive print shops all over the world can get their hands on it if people want it.
What I'm trying to say is that I doubt very much that people would have a hard time finding that size of paper if they want it. Staples has international stores all over the world they just go by different names. (Like Corporate Express in New Zealand)

I have never seen an office supply store in the U.S. that did not have legal paper in stock. Having said that, I do not think it is still widely used in business.

One question for the OP to consider is whether people who wouldn't normally use a particular size of paper would want to buy a ream of it for the sake of printing a few sheets.

Here in the UK I have never come across Legal paper. If I wanted it I don't doubt I could order a ream from some office supply chain but if I only wanted a few sheets I wouldn't bother, unless what I was proposing to print was something good enough to warrant having 493 sheets of paper in a size I'd never use left over afterwards.

In the print setup/preview, set to:

    Print to Fit Page Size.

There are some copiers that have trays for letter, legal and then a larger size called tabloid or periodical. It's what people use to make brochures.

I agree with TeddyV - tell your print preview to fit to page.

Tabloid (11x17"), is also referred to Ledger.

Cool. Thank you! I like the name ledger MUCH better than I do tabloid. For obvious reasons :-)
