90% of Qatar’s population of about two million is made up of migrant laborers. These migrant workers come from places like Sri Lanka and the Philippines. The Qataris (10%) enjoy the highest GDP per capita in the world. Expatriates and migrant workers are generally perceived and treated by Qataris as slaves. Forced labor and human trafficking are major problems. Working conditions for migrant workers can be inhumane and dangerous; they face underpayment, domestic violence, sexual abuse and lack proper living conditions. It is not uncommon for them to die at their work place from heat stroke or exhaustion. Believers are subject to the death penalty in this nation. This nation, home to Al Jazeera news agency, also has the lowest illiteracy rate in the Arab world.

Open Doors supports the church in the Arabian Peninsula through prayer support.
