DOWNLOAD FACT SHEET
Over the years, Algeria remains constant on the World Watch List. In the context of the growing role of Islamism in the region, Algeria is increasingly the scene of Islamist terror movements, particularly al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). Almost all Christians in Algeria are from a Muslim background. The law prohibits public assembly for purposes of practicing a faith other than Islam. Catholic churches, however, including a cathedral in Algiers (the seat of the Archbishop), conduct services without government interference, as does one Protestant church. In September of 2016, a believer was charged with blasphemy against Islam and its prophet on social media, which has yet to be resolved.
In cooperation with local partners and churches, Open Doors is supporting the church in Algeria through the following activities: Training, Literature distribution, Socio-economic development and Advocacy. Open Doors also raises prayer support for believers in Algeria.
