God's Due ORDER of Operations
Introduction: In the OT Israel were to demonstrate to the nations around about them how to conduct themselves in righteousness and justice. In the NT the Church is the Showroom floor (so to speak) for presenting God's will for his people. We would expect that God would be very detailed in how the Church should run in the meeting together.
We know that God does everything for a reason. We also know that God does not tolerate deviation from his pattern. (If we deviate, he simply steps back and lets us play religion)
Many today have read Chapters 11-14 out of the (during the meeting) context, choosing to take statements, that were designed to promote conscientious use of the gifts (IN THE MEETINGS) and develop doctrines to say that one can have this gift and another can have that.
IMPORTANT: If I wrote a letter to a Church who were ALREADY supposed to be operating "decently and in order" a structured operation of spiritual gifts. And in this letter I was commanding them to correct disorderly behavior. It would be erroneous to miss-apply that letter to and OUT OF MEETING SETTING.
For example; To write to a church congregation where, at any given meeting ONLY 2 or 3 would operate the gifts of (Tongues, interpretation and Prophecy) and ask the question "do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?" the answer is obviously NO. Because some may never have operated these gifts IN THE MEETING.
To conclude however that this says that (not all will speak in tongues OUTSIDE the MEETING) from this verse; which is obviously NOT OUT OF THE MEETING is deceptive and out of context.
Jesus said that Tongues would be a "Sign" that would follow believers. Tongues were also a prayer language for the edifying of the believer. The 120 who received the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost ALL spoke in tongues. There were 3000+ added to the Church that day. I am sure They would have desired the same measure of what they "saw and heard" In the next few posts I am going to go verse by verse through chapters 11-14 one chapter at a time and explain what I believe is the CRITICAL ERROR being made by most on this site.
For those who think I am making too big a deal of this ponder this. Jesus warned us that in the last days apostasy would rob the majority of relationship with God. How does deception work? If we believe we are right with God we consolidate our position and sit still. As time goes on we defend our position because we see many people, friends and family who live godly lives. Jesus said many will say “Lord Lord; I have prophesied in your name” and yet still go to hell. (Not saying this is you, only emphasizing the age we live in) BE CAUTIOUS.
Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. Rom 10:2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Rom 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
On that note let's get started:
1Co 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
1Co 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
The beginning of Chapter 11 there is instruction to” keep the ordinances" or traditions. Same word as Colossians 2:8. I suggest we need to be very careful before following after "traditions" contrary to the "order" the next few chapters lay out for us.
Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (What did we just read? "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ".)
Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
Col2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: (We are COMPLETE in him (all the gifts!)
Verses 3 to 16 cover physical appearance and general; area specific customs
1Co 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
1Co 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.
1Co 11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
1Co 11:6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
1Co 11:7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
1Co 11:8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
1Co 11:9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
1Co 11:10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
1Co 11:11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
1Co 11:12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
1Co 11:13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
1Co 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
1Co 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Verses 17 through 34 Show us clearly the SETTING. The "ordinances are specific to the structure of how meetings are run. The first order of business is the "The Lord's Table" or the Communion service.
Coming Together
συνέρχομαι sunerchomai soon-er'-khom-ahee
From G4862 and G2064; to convene, depart in company with, associate with, or (specifically) cohabit (conjugally): - accompany, assemble (with), come (together), come (company, go) with, resort.
Obviously the following chapter is instruction of "traditions" or "ordinances" with respect to the Convening or assembling together.
(sunerchomai) appears 8 times in the epistles. 5 times in this chapter and twice in chapter 14 and 1 time in chapter 7. NOT in any other epistle.
1Co 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that (ye come together) not for the better, but for the worse.
1Co 11:18 For first of all, (when ye come together) in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
1Co 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
1Co 11:20 (When ye come together) therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
1Co 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
1Co 11:22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
1Co 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
1Co 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
1Co 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
1Co 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come.
1Co 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
1Co 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
1Co 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
1Co 11:30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
1Co 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
1Co 11:33 Wherefore, my brethren, (when ye come together) to eat, tarry one for another.
1Co 11:34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; (that ye come not together) unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Obviously this section is speaking of the assembling of ourselves together for communion. The question for me here is: For Paul to move from the proper Communion structure and motives to The manifestations of the spiritual gifts at this point suggests that the Corinth fellowship already followed the Corinthians 14:26 model. This is merely a re-focusing of what our proper motives are to be. (Not some new thing) We read in 1Co 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. ("ALL the CHURCHES of the SAINTS")
