    Rev 13:1 NASB vs KJV

    NASB:
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names.
    KJV:
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
I am interested in the difference between "And the dragon stood" and "And I stood".

Was it the dragon or John that stood on the sand?

    Here are some additional translations:

GWT: The serpent stood on the sandy shore of the sea. I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns, seven heads, and ten crowns on its horns. There were insulting names on its heads.(GOD'S WORD®)

ASV: and he stood upon the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns, and seven heads, and on his horns ten diadems, and upon his heads names of blasphemy.

BBE: And he took his place on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads unholy names.

DBY: And I stood upon the sand of the sea; and I saw a beast rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and upon its horns ten diadems, and upon its heads names of blasphemy.

ERV: and he stood upon the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns ten diadems, and upon his heads names of blasphemy.

WEY: And he took up a position upon the sands of the sea-shore. Then I saw a Wild Beast coming up out of the sea, and he had ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten kingly crowns, and inscribed on his heads were names full of blasphemy.

WBS: And I stood upon the sand of the sea,\

WEB: Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names.

YLT: And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and I saw out of the sea a beast coming up, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon its horns ten diadems, and upon its heads a name of evil speaking,

Notes from a 4+ year study with a very gifted friend and teacher....

13:1: “And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names”
    A. In the original language, the phrase “And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore” is found in chapter 12, verse 18.
    B. “dragon” is actually the Greek pronoun “he” which is understood by translators to refer to the dragon of the previous chapter, 12: 3, 4, 7, 9, 13, 16, 17
    C. The dragon is identified in chapter 12 as “the serpent of old, who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world”, 12:9.
    D. He is said to “stand on the sand of the seashore”
    1. He is plotting his war against the “seed of the women”, 12:17.
    2. He is positioning himself to call up the beast out of the sea.
    3. With the devil standing by the sea awaiting the beast, Rev 13:1 is in line with (or perhaps is a fulfillment of?) Dan 7:2-3, where the sea in Daniel’s vision is the source of all 4 beasts or kingdoms that we encounter in Rev 13:1-2.
    4. It is possible that the sea in John’s vision represents the abyss of Rev 11:7 and 17:8, which would be the counterpart to the sea in both visions (See further discussion in E.6 below).
    a. Daniel saw the sea as the source of the 4 beasts and the “little horn”, Dan 7:8
    b. John saw the sea as the source of the “beast”, 13:1
    E. “Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea”
    1. This is a continuation of John’s vision that began in 12:1 re: the “woman clothed with the sun”, 12:1, when we were first introduced to the “dragon”, 12:3.
    2. Now we see the beginning of the war inflicted against the saints waged by the “dragon”, 12:17.
    3. The time is the midpoint of the 70th week, 12: 6,12-14
    4. It begins the unfolding of Satan’s plan to destroy the “seed of the women”, 12:15-17
    5. The word “beast” is therion, (Gk)
    a. It occurs 36 times in the book of Revelation.
    b. In the NT, it refers to wild animals usually with a ravenous appetite.
    c. It means a cruel beast of prey.
    1. Conceptually, it is an animal that is violent with a cunning nature.
    2. E.g., it refers to a poisonous snake that bit the apostle Paul on the Island of Malta, Acts 28:4
    3. It could describe something like a tiger or a lion, cunningly stalking an antelope, waiting for the exact moment to spring violently at it, killing it brutally and violently without mercy.
    d. It stands in contrast to the other word for animal, zoon, Gk, (cf. English “zoo”), which means a living creature without the violence and cruelty and ravenous appetite.
    e. In the book of Revelation, therion refers to several different beasts based upon the context. It refers here to the beast out of the sea, i.e., the antichrist (13:1); the beast of the earth, i.e. the false prophet (13:11); the image of the beast (i.e., Antichrist, 13:14); the beast out of the bottomless pit (probably the Antichrist, 11:7); and, the beast kings of the earth (17:11), who execute Satan’s will in persecuting and killing saints (6:11-12; cf., Daniel 7:18, 27).

I have about 300plus pages of notes, but you'd get lost without 4 years of explaination behind them...

    Hope this little bit helps...

The original text omit 'Christ' from the previous verse 12:17. Rather they add here the first clause of 13:1, altering to 'he stood'.

(RBG I don't see a verse 18 in chp 12 and the beginning of Revelation tells us the sea is multitudes of people)

The beasts of Revelation are earthly things being related. The dragon is a heavenly or spiritual conception. As the dragon gives a sort of spiritual power to the beasts (earthly).
