This is a sister thread to the Calling all artists/photographers (http://bibleforums.org/showthread.php?t=55062) in the Anything goes forum. You're welcome to post your pics in here if you have any that you've taken.

Here are some aerial views of the area where I live, that I took the other day.

Here's the plane

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff160/dljc/smaller3.jpg

Now maybe you're wondering why I would want to live where I do? Well, you decide if it's worth it?

That's quite a special view. Bet you feel close to God when you see that. I always tingle when I see beautiful scenes like that and wish that when I take photo's that I could really capture it, but somehow I can never really "get it".

I tried when I was in India to capture the Taj Mahal at dawn and took picture after picture to try to capture the feeling of the changing light, but just ended up with loads of photos that looked very nearly the same......

Hi Wildy,

I do admire the view often, and especially when I see a beautiful sunset. In the evenings sometimes my mini blinds will change color indicating there is a beautiful sunset outside to see. :) It truly amazes me to see how He will construct any given sunset with the various cloud formations and the colors that are in those clouds. I am in awe of Him when I see these masterpieces.

I wish I could tell you how to capture things on film as you've described. Honestly I don't know how. I have never had a photography class. The only thing I know to tell you is this. Watch the moment and when it speaks to you most, take the shot. That will probably be the picture that speaks the thousand words. If nothing else, to you it will be. Here is why I say that. When I was looking back over the aerial shots I took, I remembered the moment in my mind. I remembered the anticipation, the fear, the excitement whatever it was that accompanied that photograph. That moment in time was captured on film. The photo itself will always have more of a special meaning to the photographer that took it. They were there at that moment in time. The photographers job is to try and capture that moment in such a way, that it will speak to the observer of it, in as much of a similar way as possible. But it will never have the same meaning it has to the photographer.

I'm going to post some more photos I've taken over the years a little later in this thread. I was hoping to give others a chance to post some of their photos before I do. I didn't want it to look like this was my own private collection thread. :D

I don't know what the rules are on linking, but I don't really know how to post individual pictures. So, here is a link to my Flickr account where I have some of my pictures.

Even though my faith isn't strong, going out into nature and seeing the beauty in this world always helps to bring me back, which is why I've taken quite a liking to photography.

Very nice shot, Cliff. What ruins are those?

dljc
Nov 10th 2007, 02:24 AM
Sorry Tanya I didn't see this until now. That was taken at Mesa Verde in Colorado near Durango and the Four Corners region. It's the ruins of the Anasazi Indians.

Tanya~
Nov 10th 2007, 02:58 AM
It's so amazing to think of how the people lived in those places. Some of these places are in the most precarious positions, like Montezuma castle (http://www.destination360.com/north-america/us/arizona/montezuma-castle.php)for example.

dljc
Nov 10th 2007, 03:07 AM
The Anasazi Indians had climbing foot/hand holds that led to the area they lived in in the picture I took, and then they had some that went nowhere. That was to throw off warring tribes. They would think they were climbing up to the living area, and they would end up reaching a point that just stopped or something like that.

But it is amazing to see the places these people lived. Much of the choice was for protection from the elements and warring tribes though. Thanks for the link btw.

We all think of streets of gold and I don't doubt heaven will be more than we could possibly imagine. But when I see out my window, (well, thats not out my window but you know what I mean) It is more than my feeble finite mind can comprehend that heaven could be any more beautiful than what God has already shown us. I wish I could take better pictures and capture what I see.

QD... please keep sharing! I especially liked the middle photo. Makes me want to go for a walk! (It looks something like that on my road.)

This is another grandson... #3. He's so cute and has a major thing about things matching. (He's always lining things up by color, size, etc. Things need to be orderly or he scolds the offenders.) On the day of this picture, he dressed himself and needed gray in his shirt to go with his pants, but somehow he lost all his matching ability when it got to his shoes. And how about that crazy necklace he wore all day?

All these pictures are great! Kayte, the one of your two grandsons hugging cuz dad is chasing them and you said they were best friends...that reminds me so much of my 2 older brothers who are about 2 years apart. They were like that all there lives and even to this day, in their 50's, they live next door to each other and are always looking out for each other. When the younger one is down, the older one always comforts him and cheers him back up.

Here's some stuff I've worked on recently for Graphic Design and Drawing III:

This isn't the final version. I made some changes before I turned it in, but this is pretty much how it looked.
http://home.mchsi.com/~avegen/fullpage.png

For GD2 we had to design a timeline of a subject of our choice. I made up a fake History of the World timeline using scenes from Homestar Runner.
http://home.mchsi.com/~avegen/TimelineFull.png

A mini-booklet jacket design (including the flaps that fold in). I also designed the actual booklet itself.
http://home.mchsi.com/~avegen/heroic.PNG

In GD2 we had to redesign a series of three books, so I chose the Circle Trilogy.

Yes they are from my garden. We are in our 11th straight year of drought in Southern Australia so rain is a bit of a novelty for us. Last year we couldn't even water our gardens here so anything not drought proof died. Thankfully the roses didn't though they had very few flowers last year.

It's a Bobcat, I'm not sure if we have any Lynx around here. The interesting thing was I was at the tailgate of the truck that it is sitting on when I took some of the pictures. It didn't appear to be afraid of me or threatened by me at all. It's eyes were closed because of the spotlight I used to see it.

Tanya, you might like this one I took today. Unfortunately I probably need a bit more magnification on my macro to do these justice as this was a very heavy crop so the quality is not great. Also I blew out the reflective areas on its face with the flash.

Even something as ugly as a fly can look beautiful when you see the intricacies of its construction. It just makes me think of how awesome God is, who made all these things. Insects are particularly fascinating because they're just so perfectly designed for what they do.

Thanks RoadWarrior.

I currently use a Nikon D70s and a variety of lenses including Nikons 50mm 1.8, 18-70mm, 70-200VR & a Tamron 90mm macro lens. Hoping to update in the next 6 months to the new D300 and probably also a new 24-70mm 2.8.

Leigh -

We just bought DH a Nikon D80. He's used an SLR before, but I'm totally at a loss. I'd like to learn the basics so that I can take nice pictures on a retreat I just signed up for in February. Is there a book or anything that you could recommend for beginners? Right now I'm at the point where I take better pictures with my point and shoot than I do with the new camera. I'm probably just not using it right...

Hi Kat,
I didn't read any books (apart from the manual) so I can't recommend any. If you go nikonians.org they have lots of info there (including book recommendations) as well as a dedicated forum for D80 users. If your husband is familar with an SLR he should be able to get the hang of it pretty easily. The major difference between film and digital is you can adjust the ISO for individual shots and the D80 should be pretty useable up to ISO 1600 with a bit of noise reduction.

If you're a newby to DSLR photography (I only started myself about 12 months ago) the 3 things you need to learn about are shutter speed, aperture and ISO and the relationship between these three variables. The D80 has an 'Auto' mode which will basically do what a P&S will do so you should be able to get reasonble pics with that until you work out the basics. I tend to use Aperture priority the most and manual when using flash.

Don't know if you got a lens with the camera but if you want a general all purpose lens then the 18-200mm VR is a pretty good option. Also you may want to invest in some editing software if you haven't already.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Cheers

I believe we may have the lens you mentioned. The minimum I know is 18mm, but I'm not sure about the 200mm. I'll start with the manual and see what I can learn. Thanks for your input!

Hi Tanya,
The spider was on our back sliding screen door which has a steel mesh screen that you can see clearly in the foreground. While I wasn't thinking about it at the time, I think the mesh adds an interesting dimension to the photo.

I used to do some photography, but it was a bit amatuerish and not that great. I enjoyed it though, until my camera broke :( I got a new better one for Christmas but I haven't got round to doing anymore photography with it yet, I've been too busy, but I'll probably start doing more in the summer once exams are out of the way.

Some of my favourite photos I've taken:

Thanks. It's not a particularly flashy camera or anything, it just has more megapixels than my old one did. Unfortunately I was at a gig 2 months ago when someone threw what I think was Smirnoff Ice across the crowd and it went on my camera and made it sticky :( Hopefully it will still work fine, I've not actually used it since then.

Sorry guys, got no idea what it is. I've tried to find it on the web but so far no joy. It has a tuberous root and grows like a vine on the ground. The flowers are trumpet shaped and open up early mornings and close up when it gets a bit hotter. I suspect it is actually some type of weed.

They were taken with Nikon D70s with a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter & Tamron 90mm macro with a reversed Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens. Total of about 2.5x magnification. Most of the droplets are only 2-3mm diameter. Also used a flash which was placed directly above the subject. The photos were also focus stacked meaning each image is made up of 3-5 combined images and this allows me to get greater depth of field (ie. more things in focus).

Cheers

SO Beautiful!! It's wonderful, like a whole other world in a tiny dewdrop. Macro shots are my favorites because they really do take you into another world. These things always make me think of the wonderful power of God who knows the great vastness of outer space as well as the great vastness of the most minute things that we can't even see.

That is AWESOME!!! I'm using an older Nikon (a D40) and I'm still looking for an affordable macro lens. (with 3 kids though it's down on my list lol)

Macro's are my favorite shots however :)

Here (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa235/songladyjenn/CSC_0236.jpg) is one I took not that long ago at our local zoo.... I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Great Shot Jenn.

As far as cheap macros go you can buy some extension tubes which allows closer focusing and more magnification. Reversing a lens on the camera (the 50mm 1.8 is quite good for this) and the reversing ring is quite cheap. You can pick some pretty cheap used macros as well for about $150 and some of the older manual focus Nikons (eg. 105mm without VR) are also excellent value. If you have a longer tele lens (100-300mm) you can also buy a close-up lens (eg. Canon 500D for $140) that screws into the front and allows you to focus closer.

Here's (http://www.peterforsell.com/macro.html) a link that might give you some ideas.

Here's a recent picture of a visitor to my garden. Luckily I managed to get the camera and fire off some pictures of it before it flew away.

Hi photographers and photo-lovers;

Here is a link to a video by a National Geographic photographer. It was done as a motivational video, and it truly is inspiring. It talks about the philosophy of National Geographic, Celebrate what is right in the world. I hope you enjoy it. You'll need to set aside a few minutes to watch it, it is 22 minutes long; but you'll probably want to watch it more than once!
