This morning I had a two hour delay for work so I got to wait till the sun came up to snow blow the driveway. While doing this, my neighbor showed up with his tractor to help out. So what did I do to help... I ran in the house and grabbed my camera... what else is a good neighbor to do

Here are some photos I've taken this winter.

This first photo is of my dog Smokey. I was playing with him one night and caught him with my flash as he was moving in on me at a run:

In this next photo I took a shot of our birdbath and feeder:

In this final photo I caught the water dropping from ice as it melted in the sun:

I went outside this afternoon to take some pictures and noticed a grackle at my main bird feeder. Now I don't like grackles. They are loud and noisy, not to mention they are pigs! But I noticed that I kept getting closer and closer to the feeder and the bird wasn't flying away. Once I got to the other side I found out why. Here's a picture of him. Poor thing. I am assuming it is a birth defect. He can't fly very well either. I have some limbs that go right up to the feeder for the birds to sit on. He would get on that limb and climb the rest of the way to the feeder. I took pictures of him for awhile as he ate.

I took a picture 10 days ago with snow coving the ground... about 6". Yesterday it was sunny and 60. I took this picture yesterday afternoon of a white-throated sparrow searching for food on the ground. Look at all that beautiful green! Spring is finally coming!!!

It's just that these will most likely be the scantily clad types. I'm going to talk with him to see what it's all about, before making a decission.

It's been awhile since I posted in here!

The War Memorial in our town is made up of a small lighthouse that is about 15 feet tall. On it is the plaque and names are in the stones around the base. Behind it is a flagpole about 70 feet high that has a cannon on each side of it aimed out over the water. The flagpole is about 20 feet behind the lighthouse so you can imagine the angle I took this shot at...

Hi photographers and photo-lovers;

(I posted this in the CA Kicking Back thread, but wanted to also put it here for the rest of us.)

Here is a link to a video by a National Geographic photographer. It was done as a motivational video, and it truly is inspiring. It talks about the philosophy of National Geographic, Celebrate what is right in the world. I hope you enjoy it. You'll need to set aside a few minutes to watch it, it is 22 minutes long; but you'll probably want to watch it more than once!

A friend recently gave me an old Mercury II camera. It's from the 20's or 30's as near as I can figure. It's one of the first 35mm's but the orientation is portrait not landscape. There are 65 exposures on a 36-exposure roll. I tried it out last week:
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z95/Jehu10842/Old%20BW/chopper-2.jpg
It leaks light and scratches the film but it works. So I took it to our golf tounament last Friday. This is an unbroken scan of 4 frames:

Would you believe I just now discovered this wonderful thread? Wow, we really have some great photographers and terrific photos here!

Jess, I love birds and do bird watching so was delighted by your pictures of them especially with the little one (house finch or redpole) with the iced wings. And these last photos your husband took of underwater scenes are great. Thanks for sharing..

Those fireworks photos, Slug, are beyond words..thanks so much for sharing them too.

Going through this long and wonderful thread just blessed the socks right off of me this morning! Thank you all for sharing your pictures with us. My son, a 42 yr. old specialty contractor, does a lot of photography so I know some of the in's and out's of it. It's a wonderful hobby for him and many of you as well. :pp He does contracting for a living but calls photography and the making of frames his avocation and has shown his work in various shows and galleries. And gives us samples (framed by his craft work too) on various occasions. I love it!

God bless,

Yup this reminds me of a verse in the book of Malachi chapter 4:1-2:

"For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

I just finished this as a gift for my boss from her husband and the whole staff - she opened it last night at the office Christmas party. It's an acrylic portrait of her horse Rosie done from a series of photos taken on an excursion to a local wash (dried riverbed) when it actually had water in it. She got a bit teary eyed upon seeing it, which was a relief because I was worried she might not like it.

Your barb wire shot fooled me. It looked like you had a centered field of focus (as done with LF) but it's the round post that gives it that illusion. The barb wire is in focus the full width. Either way that's a great capture!

Lovely painting, Desperaux! Nice lighting and perfect title!

Urban Missionary - what a beautiful farm, is that yours? I can imagine you could feel very close to God in a place like that!

Here are a few new paintings of mine...

Yeah, its the family farm with a few hundred acres. That is me giving my son his first ride. I wish you lived a lot closer so you could paint some of our horses and the mountain. It is probably a good thing you live so far away though, as I would be in constant debt to you. You have an AWESOME talent, especially for horses. Do you sell any of your paintings and if so, where? I'm serious.

I LOVE YOUR WORK!

Thanks... I have a couple galleries, am always sending pieces to various art shows and have a blog/website (link in signature).

I'm always looking for good places to get photos for paintings - there's not a whole lot of wide open pastoral scenes here in the desert - cacti make bad pasture buddies, lol.

Well, I live in Appalachia. North Carolina to be more precise.

If I could take a decent picture, I would send you some, but I am not a photographer. Here are a couple of snapshots, but I doubt it is anything you can use.

This is a colt that died the day after it was born.

Thank you--I value your opinion! I am mostly amateur, although I have had a painting published in a magazine and as a book cover and I have illustrated for a book as well. I also worked as a muralist when my children were youngsters.

Your work is beautiful!

God bless.

Yes. Two of them were done in Terragen and Photoshop. The kooky space one (read morphine induced hallucination) Is a group of four dimensional fractals composed of 127 different layers. And finally, the photo retouches were done freehand in Photoshop 7.

Urban... hmmm, I've never been to that part of the country, though I hope to someday. I'm trying to get to Kentucky in the next year or two (to do an artist-in-residence at the KY Horse Park), and if we drive my husband has family in SC we'd probably try to visit. If we ever plan such a trip I'll let you know!

I love your arab mare, she's lovely. I know of Am. Curly's, though I've never tried to paint one (a little unsure how to deal with the unusual coat). That's sad you lost that foal, it was cute. The paint stable I worked at years ago had a lethal white foal, that was a depressing day.

Nice mural, Desperaux! Congrats on being published, something about seeing ones work in print is awesome!

Wow, Tonton, those are dramatically beautiful!

tt1106 - nice photos, love the sleepy St Bernard, lol!

I can take some detailed photos of the curly if you ever want to paint one. They are EXTREMELY rare 'round these parts. No one I know has ever heard of one.

I love my "Lady", she is a great horse. I would love to get you to paint her one day.

If you head this direction, let me know, the door is always open. We'll grab the cameras, saddle up the horses (we have 19 of them) an go ride the mountain trail that goes all the way around the Mountain.

I did this on my day off Thursday. Sometimes I like to tackle a simple painting I can go from start to finish in one day, a little instant gratification to keep things fun. This is a horse named Dommie, and it's a 14 x 18 oil...

SC actually, but hubby's folks live in Lewisville, right outside W-S. We drive by it all the time when we go up that way, but it looks like you took those shots from a little different angle that what I'm used to. We usually see it going down 52.

Wow, UM.... That 'cardboard sermon' picture.... it's captivating. Does it have a story to go with it? Did you meet that man?

Firefighter
Jul 16th 2009, 11:51 AM
That man is a vet. For him to get the medical help he needs, he has to come from southern Virginia to North Carolina to be seen at a VA hospital. While he is here getting treatments, he is basically homeless. He "flies a sign" (street lingo for holding a sign asking for money) to make enough money to eat and hopefully get back home. He used to come to my church when he was in town. He is a wonderful old man with lots of wisdom. I cannot believe that we treat our vets like this.

These are the people my church actively sought after.

The picture right above that one is of two real crack pipes that were left at the altar.
