View Full Version : Hurricane Ike

Sep 16th 2008, 03:16 PM
Please pray for everyone that was in the path of this storm.

I'm starting a I don't like "Ike" club. :D just jokin.

In all seriousness Ike hit my hometown hard.
I live in Bridge City (Orange county) TX.

My wife, our two kids, 13 yr. old lab and my parents evacuated to Idabel
Oklahoma. I would just like to praise a small little church there that we
visited Sunday morning trying to get our minds off the storm. The pastor
gave a timely sermon and they really ministered to our souls. They even
took up a love offering and was willing to put us up in their parsonage.

I cannot thank them enough.

My family is now stayin with some friends in Dallas. We're just now
getting to an internet connection and I'm realising just how much
damage Ike has done. Not just on the coast but a path through the
nation. Yikes!

Athorities are letting residents into the SE Texas area to begin the clean
up. I hope to go tomorrow.

I've been told that there was 3 to 4 feet of water in my house. My
parents 1 to 2 ft. My grandmaw 6 feet. Just about everyone that I've
spoken to had anywhere from 1 to 6 ft. of water. I hear it's a mess.

This link shows some pictures of the area...

The reality of the situation didn't hit me until we were driving in to
Dallas...My wife looked at me and said we can fit everything we have now
into the cab of this pick-up. I said yea...but it's an extended cab. :P
I don't know when I'll be able to go back to work either. :confused

I guess at this point all I can say is...

Job:21 And he said:

“ Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

I'm praying that I lean on the Lord fully that He shall derect my steps.
I'll give updates as I can.

Please pray with me

With love,

P.S. please pray for my wife, this has really hit her hard.

Bringing you and your family before the Lord. So often we just don't understand why we have to go through these things..but it is an opportunity to say, No matter, God is my God!

Yes, please keep praying for the Houston Area... from what I understand, most of us are still without power- and those are the fortunate ones! The damage is very wide-spread and serious... I'm up in Abilene this weekend, but my family is still without power and I'll probably be bringing back some Ice and/or gas for family members so we can continue to drive and keep our food cold.

Thank you for all of your prayers!
Sarah

Praying this morning as with others here my heart goes out to all of those who were in the path of the storm and those who are dealing with the aftermath. Strength and mercy for all in the Name of Jesus. Please God come to their assistance quickly.

Amen and amen...

Sep 27th 2008, 04:23 AM
Hey, thank ya'll for all the prayers...

Man Bridge City is ugly. It was much worse than I expected. It stinks
too. I've never gagged so much in my life.

I had 4.5 ft. of water in my house. Most of my family lives in Bridge City.
I had one grandmother that had 6 ft. of water, the other had 1.5 ft. My
parents had 3 ft. , an aunt & uncle with 2ft. & a cousin with 2 ft. Mold is
growing everywhere.

Still, I can see God's grace working in these trying circumstances and
through His people. My dad I would say is an agnostic. He has a very
hard heart towards the church. The Lord used that humble little church
up in Oklahoma that I spoke about in the OP to tear down some fortified

My dad even wanted to send a letter thanking them for the heartfelt love
they showed for our family.

There's still alot of work to do so I guess I gotta go.

Please continue to pray...

May God's grace abound,

Sep 27th 2008, 01:54 PM
My praying continues for all in this...

Sep 27th 2008, 10:46 PM
It's awesome to hear you speak of how God is working
in this time of need :pp
Still praying for all recovery in body, soul and spirit and
all of your homes.
God Bless your families and all the others. in Christ,Darlene

Continuing to pray for all those that suffered in the path of IKE...Kingfisher, your faith is a blessing...some would not be thanking the Lord or anyone else in these difficult times...May God's mercies continue to be with you and your family and all of those in dire straits.

Only God knows the end from the beginning..Prayerfully, many will be won to HIS Kingdom through the compassion of others, like the "little church" in OK!!! Amen. Praying, Kingfisher, for your dad...May he see the Light of the Lord in all of this..

Prayer is powerful, so we do send ya'll all of our prayers.Amen:)

Well most of the tear out is finishing up in Bridge City.
I'm seeing that this may be the hardest part...

Sure, the tear out was physically tough but now the work is slowing and
the mind is racing.

For the ones without flood insurance I've seen a helpless look in their
faces. There are some christian groups who have come in the area and
are begining to help them as much as possible. What a blessing it has
been to see their selfless sacrifice. Please pray for the uninsured and the
volunteer builders here to help.

For the ones with insurance it doesn't seem to be much better. I'm in this
group myself. I havn't recieved a settlement yet but the ones that I have
seen with some of my family is really low. For instance my anut & uncle
were given a quote from the insurance for $55,000 yet all the builders
they're getting quotes from are in the $90,000 range. Who's right? :B

I'm really trying to pray for God's will to be done in my life.

I'm a "planner"...In the past I've tried to plan all the details of my life and
usually only frustrate myself when thing don't work out and I have to
"replan". I've learned...ok, I'm still learning...

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

I need ya'lls prayers in this area too.

Oct 13th 2008, 05:10 AM
Dear Father, please continue to help this family caught in the horrors of that storm. Give the wife comfort in what You're doing in their lives, and provide all their need according to Your riches in glory in Jesus' name. AMEN.

Oct 13th 2008, 11:20 AM
Thank you larry and everyone else for the prayers

Things are proceeding slowly at the moment.

I did receive the estimate from the adjuster at $50,000 for the
rebuild of the structure. Still well short of the $70,000-90,000 bids.

Although we did max out our contents portion.

My aunt and uncle are having problems with their insurance and are hiring
a public adjuster.

Were stayin with my wife's parents until we can get back home. We went
to their church yesterday and meet a lawyer in Sunday school class. He
really was a blessing in answering so many questions.

Oct 23rd 2008, 04:23 PM
Everyone, :help:

My family needs your prayers.

I'm not getting anywhere with the adjuster and insurance.
I feel they are pressuring me to settle for a lesser amount
than what I feel is necessary to rebuild. I'm getting bogged
down in not knowing the system and the adjuster working it
in his favor. :B

I just contacted a lawyer...I guess this is going to take longer
than I thought. :confused

I'm praying for God's guidance.

Also, please continue to pray for my wife. She is not doing good. She
spoke to me yesterday about speaking with a counselor. She's having
anxiety and is feeling really depressed.

I don't know what to do but pray for her.

I've kinda let all this beat me up...I'm tired

Please pray for us,

Oct 24th 2008, 09:20 PM
We've been praying since this morning, when we glanced at the email and saw the notification, but hadn't had a chance to reply until now. Sorry to hear about this struggle you and your wife are in, but we will keep praying. Keep on holding on to Daddy and He will take you through it all. Be encouraged!

Love you much,

Hey ya'll,

Been missing ya'll. Thanks for the prayers and encouragement. It really
made a difference over the weekend.

I don't mind the struggle...that's part of the race we run. I did try to run
too fast though...maybe that planning part of me running ahead in my own
strength. I forgot this race is one of endurance...not a sprint. Kinda tired
myself out.

Annie and I bought each other new Bibles over the weekend. That's
something we've both been missing...Reading our Bibles.

Love ya'll,

Hey my friend,

We bought a nice card for you and Annie, but we didn't know where to send it. Can you pm us your address? We only got the one of the flooded house and I don't know if we can send mail there.....

Love you both,
Mieke

Nov 3rd 2008, 01:42 PM
Everyone, thanks for the prayers.

Things are still progressing slowly...but now in the right direction.

Our lawyer put in a call to the homeowners insurance after he told us that
they are supposed to cover some of the wind damage and loss of use.

They called us wanting to set up a time to meet with an adjuster not long
after he called them. This is really a blessing because this is help we
weren't counting on.

The flood insurance is still going slow. Although we're gaining on a strong
case if they wont settle with us.

Also I've had a few people interested in buying my house as is. Which
seems weird but I guess they are wanting to flip it for profit. This is an
interesting thought because my wife and I have always wanted to build a
house. I don't know...we're praying for direction with this.

Thank ya'll,

Nov 3rd 2008, 03:40 PM
*praying* Lord I lfit up KingFisher and his wife and I ask that you lead and guide them in the way that YOU want them to go. Please give them peace and comfort. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Dec 2nd 2008, 05:03 PM
Well...there's been some slow progress made.

Our lawyer hired a public adjuster and we meet with them.
They were very thorough and pointed out several things that
the insurance adjuster didn't include and I never thought of.

Re-nailing every stud to the base plate...The adjuster told me
to look at the nail head into the upper header it was nice and
clean. He then told me to look at the nails into the base
plate. The were really rusty even after only a few months.

Then he pointed out that the salt water had begun to rust all
of my electrical wiring. I have "old school" wiring that contains
a paper core and it wicked moisture well above the water line.
Then...one point after another he explained more hidden damage
that had occurred.

That was three weeks ago and were just waiting on their
final adjustment of the damage before proceeding.

Also my homeowners insurance came back out after the lawyer
called them about the wind damage. I pointed out some damage
to my patio. The flood waters never reached that high and it
should be obvious that it's wind damage.

At least I thought so. The homeowners insurance adjuster said
he thinks it's flood damage or ground settlement...but to throw
me a bone he said they would send out a structural engineer to
look at it. We asked about the additional living and the homeowners
adjuster quickly said no, that we wont recieve this because it's all
flood damage. That we should check with the flood insurance
about this...he left out or doesn't know that flood insurance doesn't
cover this.

This was three weeks ago also...

I'm beginning to think I'm supposed to learn patience
through all of this. :D

James 5:11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure.
You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the
end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very
compassionate and merciful.

Please continue to pray,

Charles and I are praying for you. Thank you for the update.

Ya'll are always in our prayers also...

Love ya'll,

Jan 21st 2009, 03:20 PM
Hi everyone,

Our old pastor and their family are in need of everyone's prayers.

They had about 4.5ft. of water in their house just like we did.
They finally settled with their insurance and were about to begin

Last weekend their house caught fire and burned to the ground. They are
living in a FEMA trailer across town and no one saw the fire until it was well

They are holding up well under the circumstances but please pray for

With my house...

Our public adjusters estimate came in and it was $20,000 over what the
insurance estimate was. This is good news.

We are sending the public adjusters estimate along with contractor
estimates, home inspectors reports...etc. for an appeal to the insurance.

I've been told that we have a good case to get what the public adjusters
findings were.

I've been praying that God will allow us favor with those He has placed
in authority of the appeals process.

I really don't know how long this will take though. :dunno:
Also other good news is my parents moved back into their house 2 weeks

An aunt and uncle are a few weeks from moving in. One of my grandmaws
is near settling with her insurance.

Most of my neighbors that didn't have insurance have received much
needed help form churches. Two of those neighbors are weeks away from
moving in.

Please continue to pray with us...

Apr 6th 2009, 11:57 AM

It's been 7 months now. Kinda hard to believe. I never thought that it would
take this long just to settle with the insurance, which never happened. Our
appeal is still with FEMA. I found out they have 90 days to mitigate the
case, which puts us in late May if the take their time.

The appeal is for flood damage.

The majority of the damage to the house is flood. Although we have some
wind damage to our patio. It separated from the house. The homeowners
insurance which should cover wind damage looked at it and said no this is
from flood or was preexisting. We've hired a lawyer and he is busy with
our case.

I'm still learning to endure with patience.

We're still livin with my wife's parents. They really have been a blessing. I
don't know if I'll ever be able to thank them enough. Although they are glad
to have their grandkids so close.

May 8th 2009, 08:34 PM
:pray:Still enduring with patience...

If anyone is still reading this thread please continue to pray for us.
About 3 weeks ago FEMA made the ruling to have the insurance company
re-evaluate our flood claim. They said that we were owed some more

Well, the insurance company re-evaluated it and I just recived the final
amount. It is for an additional $3000. Still more than I had yesterday but
not near enough to cover all the damages along with the original amount
that we recieved.

$20,000 dollars short actually.

To me that's a huge shortfall. I still can't get a satifactory answer as to
why the insurance amount is so much lower than the public adjuster, and
contractor bid's that we have.

I've even had contractors tell me that they can't fully repair the house for
the amount that was given. :B

At this point I don't know what to do but pray and pray and pray...

and ask others for prayers...

For about the first 5 minutes after recieving this final amount I felt like
giving up:giveup: (on fighting the claim). After praying I feel rejuvinated and
resolved to stay in the fight. I ain't throwin in tha towel!!!

I just ask for y'all to pray that God will guide me and supply the energy
and focus required.

P.S. We're still livin with the in-laws and are doing fine otherwise

May 8th 2009, 11:24 PM
:pray::pray:Prayers going up for you and your family....it's not easy living with others, after being on your own! God will see you through; fight the fight with the strength HE will supply; glorify HIS Mighty Name in every opportunity...Give HIM thanks, even when you don't feel like it....HE is working on something for your good...whatever the devil meant for evil, God will turn it to good!!! Glory to God....Alleluia.:pp

Why do we pay insurance? What happens if we don't pay? What happens if they don't pay? It seems that the scales are tipped toward injustice....but, our God is still on the throne and still in control...there is NO name greater than HIS!!!:spin::spin::spin:

God Bless:hug:

May 9th 2009, 12:48 AM
I have faith that God will bring you through. Jesus Christ died for all, and when you are His child, He works everything together for the good. :)

Keep the faith and stay strong. Jesus is with you. :)

May 9th 2009, 01:26 AM
We're still praying for you my friend.... And you know you can always pm me if you want to/need to talk, ok?

Love you lots,
Mieke

May 15th 2009, 10:17 PM
 Thank you all for the prayers!

Yesterday we met with our lawyer. He suggested that we invoke the
appraisal clause in our policy contract. I didn't even know we had a appraisal
clause, much less what that meant.

He talked to us about it and explained how the process works. It seems that
a third party "umpire" comes in and "referees" between the differences.

I'm trying to read more about it, but it seems like a better route than suing
which can get tied up in court for years.

Anyways, thanks for the prayers,

May 15th 2009, 10:28 PM
Charles and I are still praying for you guys......

Love y'all,
Mieke

May 18th 2009, 11:17 AM
Annie, the kids and I thank y'all very much!!!

We've drafted our letter now we just need to send it in.

Oh, and well be praying for y'all too...

Jun 23rd 2009, 09:35 PM
Thank you all for the prayers.

Please continue...

For the wind damage we will be going tomorrow (6-24) to Houston. We
will meet with our lawyer, the insurance company's lawyer and a judge
who will serve to mitigate the differences. This will keep it from going to

For the flood I have asked for what is called the "apprasial process".
Basically the process consists of the insurance company adjuster, our
adjuster and an impartial 3rd party adjuster who will serve to umpire
a settlement. If at any time any 2 of the 3 agree the claim will be solved
and binding.

We're getting close...Thanks!

Jun 23rd 2009, 10:09 PM
We will pray for you tomorrow my friend.....
Give our love to your wife and the kids.....

Love you lots,
Mieke

Jun 25th 2009, 11:59 AM
Thanks for the prayers!

We were able to reach a settlement for the wind damages. :pp

Now the flood...

Jun 25th 2009, 12:31 PM
Praying for you family to recover from the hurricaine damage, for mercy and guidance for the people affected in general, and for your father's salvation.

Jul 21st 2009, 11:09 AM
I have great news!

We have settled with both insurances.
Praise the Lord!

We're going to buy some land to build on.
We hope to close on the property after we get a survey done.

As a draftsman I have drawn some house plans that we hope to
use. Today we are going to meet with a builder to get an estimate
on the costs.

Tomorrow we are meeting with a real estate agent at our old house.
She is going to appraise the house to sell it in the condition that it is
in. Seems home builders are buying the flooded properties to repair
and flip for a profit.

Please continue to pray for us.

I hope to follow God's plans and timing in all of this.

Jul 25th 2009, 10:11 PM
So far so good! We'll continue to pray for more good results!

Love you lots,
Mieke

Sep 18th 2009, 12:22 PM
Well we have reached an agreement with a buyer on our house.

The buyers are an aunt & uncle of some good friends of ours.
We reached the agreement in early August. They told us that to
save time & money that they could handle all the closing stuff
themselves. They told me that because of their backgrounds
they are expeirenced in handling this stuff. Usually I would
have said no and wanted to go through a title company for
several reasons. The money savings really wasn't a factor,
although saving time was appealling. Because they were
family of our friends I trusted them.

Well, we signed papers on Aug. 20th. They told me that to
make this all go more smoothly that they could pay off the
the house by sending the money in from the uncle's (a lawyer)
trust fund. He was supposed to send it in that following Monday.

That didn't happen...excuses were made...I still wasn't to
concerned though.

The next promised date slipped by...excuses were made...
Slight concern setting in now.

This has happened several times.

I was now told that the payment would be sent in this past
Wednesday by a wire transfer. That afternoon I called
and was told that no wire transfer was recieved. I talked
to the uncle and he told me it was sent by mail. So we are
still waiting for the payment ot be recieved. We cant apply
for a construction loan until the old loan is paid off.

So were just waiting...again.

Please pray...

Nov 23rd 2009, 01:09 PM
Well the flooded house finally sold. About two months ago...sorry for not

In the mean time we have been really busy.

All this time I've been working on finallizing a set of house plans. We have
chosen a builder that we trust and will be closing this Wednessday (11/25)
on the construction loan.

We will be breaking ground after Thanksgiving.

P.S. The construction should take 3 to 4 months.

Nov 23rd 2009, 01:27 PM
Good news! :pp

Are you building a new house in the same place you are now? Or near the flooded house?

Love you lots,
Mieke

Nov 23rd 2009, 01:54 PM
Near my sister in Mauriceville.

It's a little further from the coast...
Out of Cat. 5 hurricane flood range though. ;)

We are really excited...and thankfull!

Nov 23rd 2009, 03:16 PM
That's good! :pp

Please let me know the address when you are going to move in there, so I can make you a "welcome in your new house"-card!

Let your wife know that I am grateful (even though we don't celebrate it) on Thanksgiving for beautiful friends like you! Still have the Christmastree hanging next to my bed and I ain't going to move it either!

Love you lots,
Mieke
