1 Peter 3:3-6 (New King James Version)

3] Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4] rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 5] For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, 6] as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

Only Skin Deep?

Despite the obvious message of the Cover Girl and L'Oreal ads you see in magazines and on television, inner beauty is more important than outward adornment. Women spend billions each year on makeup, hair styling, manicures, pedicures, and every other possible kind of "cure." And why? well, primarily because we men want them to. Most of us husbands want our wives to look attractive and stylish, just because it makes us look better, too. But Peter tells us that beauty of character and peaceful living will outshine all the glittering jewels a woman could possibly wear. Although enslaved by our natures to the visual, we men will ultimately be won over by the "quiet and gentle spirit." God calls "precious in His sight." The caring, quiet, prayerful living testimony of a godly woman has brought many defiantly unbelieving husbands to Christ.
