View Full Version : Please Help 500 Internal Server Error

Dec 16th 2008, 06:59 PM
I just put up a page on my site, but I can't see it online. I get a 500 error.

My error log says this:
[Tue Dec 16 18:49:32 2008] [error] [client] File does not exist: /home2/gradmin/public_html/500.shtml
[Tue Dec 16 18:49:32 2008] [error] [client] SoftException in Application.cpp:252: File "/home2/gradmin/public_html/freedom/index.php" is writeable by group

I used the file manager to see the permissions, and my file is set to 0664 just like all my other files and my directory is set to 0775 just like all my other directories!

I have another page almost identical in a separate directory and it opens fine! The page contains an embedded swf which references a flv in another directory. The other page (that works) is exactly the same except it references a different flv.

I've deleted and updated, changed file and folder names, everything I can think of. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thank you so much,

Silly question here...but are you using FireFox?

I was getting the same error messages on certain sites after MS's last series of updates (Win XP Pro here).

If that's the case, go to the FireFox homepage, in the search area enter "error code 500" and it'll give you a list of fixes (depending on the "particulars") that you can apply...

It fixed my problem in about 2 minutes.

I found your problem and fixed it. Actually it was more than one issue:

1. The folder freedom/ was setup with permssions of 775 and not 755. This will cause a 500 error

2. The freedom/index.php had permission of 667 which will also not wok. It should be 644.

Check your FTP software (or whatever you use to upload) and make sure it's setting the file permissions correctly post-upload.

Here's what you need:

All folders: 755
All files including images and PHP files: 644
All perl files: 755
