Luke 1:35-37 (New King James Version)

35] And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36] Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37] For with God nothing will be impossible.”

The Incredible "What" of the Christmas Story

The events leading up to Jesus birth can be summarized by the angels words, "God can do anything" (Luke 1:37). Sometimes hope comes in a different wrapper than what you expect. this young, chaste and startled Mary was told the improbable. She will be blessed to become pregnant and give birth to the One who will sit on the throne of king David and rule forever. Even more shocking was the what of this event. The Holy Spirit was to come upon her and cover her. Indeed God can do anything!

Perhaps Mary felt a little like aged Abraham who might have adjusted his bifocals as he looked upon a little boy who was his son and not a grandson. Sometimes the what of God's action can be different than what we humans might devise, yet no matter how unpredictable, His plan is always perfect.

FOR TODAY: Look back over 2008 and thank God for what He has done in your life.
