Would a 55 Inch LCD or PC use more power?

I guess it would depend on the PC.

An old 286 doesn't take much, some of the extreme overclocked things of today can take a fair whack.

Lets say you had a top of the range PC and top of the range LCD;

What would be more power mad?

That's a tricky one, often top-end screens use less power to achieve the same as a cheaper model, while top-end PCs use more power to achieve more than a cheaper model.

Bottom line, I have no idea.

I know top LCDs require very expensive cables but pcs dont; would that make a diffence?

Cables don't change the power consumption. An expensive cable simply maintains the purity of the signal - there's no point spending thousands on a huge TV and then feeding it a grainy low-resolution feed.

Some would say there's no point spending thousands on a huge TV at all, but that's another discussion :)
