It was a condition of God's covenant with Abraham.

It happened when Jacob and his family moved to Egypt to avoid a famine.

It was a condition of God's covenant with Abraham.

It happened when Jacob and his family moved to Egypt to avoid a famine. Is condition the right word? It is a little hard to word God's pronouncement on this. God didn't "prophesy" it, right? It almost seems an aside or something. Perhaps it is a revelation, God revealed it to Abraham.

Anyway, here is the scripture Fenris references:

Genesis 15:12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

It happen when Joseph after suffering for many years down in Egypt interpreted the dreams of Pharoah. He was promoted to second only to Pharoah in Egypt. Joseph more than likely reign under a Hyksos Pharoah (Hyksos where known to the Egyptians as foreign rulers who had conquer the natives of Egypt from 1700 to 1550 AD). For we read in Exodus 1:7-10, that a Pharoah arose who knew not Joseph and was worried about the children of Israel , joining their enemies in war against them. So the Children of Israel where first favored in Egpyt before they were in Bondage.
