View Full Version : Hugo Chavez: Martian civilization undone by capitalism

Few cards short of a full deck, this fellow.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez thinks capitalism may be responsible for the lack of life on the planet Mars.

“I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,” Chavez said in a speech on Tuesday.

The socialist president has been a fierce opponent of capitalism, and during his World Water Day speech, Chavez blamed capitalism for destroying Earth’s water supplies as well.

“Here on planet Earth, where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts,” Chavez said.

If you have to make stuff up to prove your point, maybe it isn't a very good point at all.

"OMG capitalism is so evil that it destroyed Mars"

To quote Draco Malfoy, "I didn't know you [he] could read."

Maybe Mr. Soetoro should invite him over for a beer summit. :hmm:

Maybe President Chavez has been in top secret summits with Marvin the Martian, trying to persuade him NOT to blow up the earth with his PU-38 Explosive Space Modulator. Just a thought.

but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,

Who knows, maybe socialism arrived there and they ran out of other peoples' money to spend until the Martians ate each other and the last survivor died of boredom.

Maybe three hundred thousand lightly fried eggs mysteriously landed on Mars shortly after a famine which killed everybody except the last few, who died of cholesterol poisoning a few weeks later.

Gotta love it when wacky theories get given an international audience.

Sometimes English translation of Spanish (or other languages) does not always convey the proper context of the spoken word in it's origional language.
I find it difficult to believe that Chavez actually thinks Mars was populated and then destroyed by capitalism.
It seems more like dramatic, sarcastic metaphor if anything, just like when he said he could smell sulfur after Bush addressed the UN.

As far as capitalism destroying water supplies, he was likely speaking of how corporations are privatizing water rights, which requires the poorest and most needy of developing nations to pay through the nose just to have access to their own water sources. Or how corporations are draining fresh water supplies in developed nations as well, in order to sell it back to us for profit.
Could you please provide a link to the origional article so that we can examine the full context of what he said?
It would also be helpful in forming an opinion to know who his accusers are.
Thank you.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez,

“Here on planet Earth, where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts,” Chavez said.

And where once there were lucid thoughts, now only deserts.

Ok, why, exactly, are we supposed to take seriously anything this nut job of a dictator says? :confused If somebody has to go as far as Chavez has with his ludicrous assertion that capitalism is so evil that it destroyed "little green men from Mars," it shows just how desperate socialists / communists are to recruit people to their political viewpoint.
