• The Importance of Christian Parenting

A few years ago we had definite rights and definite wrongs, but today people are not certain what is right and what is wrong. We're a mess! Our children are a mess. Our homes are a mess. There is so much anger and hostility and hate and selfishness and rebellion in our homes and our children. But worse, our children are killing each other, like Cain and Abel!

God ordained two great institutions to draw the line between right and wrong--the family and the church! Both have failed. Even the lawmakers of this great land have failed. Because of them, school teachers cannot use the Bible as a standard in our schools and students can be expelled for PRAYING during school hours! Our Supreme Court Judges ruled in favor of a minority who view God and His standards of righteousness as disgusting and offensive.

God has no place in our MODERN society, it seems. We have been clobbered by the enemy. And this had led to a great void in the lives of upcoming generations.

But we parents have allowed that void (caused by the absence of God) to be replaced by overdoses of permissiveness, sex and violence. Our children are handed birth control pills at school and if--IF--they come home at night they glue themselves to the sex and killing on television, or to video games, or shut their bedroom doors and head for the computer where they learn how to get and use guns or find recipes for bomb making and we don't even know it? Or we don't care, as long as they are out of our face? Our sons and daughters either don't bother to get married, or if they do, they discard mates like used paper plates. Morality has taken a nosedive.

We need to face the facts--the problem is with our government. The problem is also in our local levels of schools and churches. But finally, the problem reaches down to the lowest rung on the ladder--to US! We all have failed. Yet, I offer that parents could be THE most positive influence on the national level, the local level and in our homes.

We, the Christian parents, could have been (and should have been!) a greater influence in the lives of our offspring. Had that happened, there would be Godly decisions handed down from Supreme Court Judges...they would have made more righteous rulings. There would be Godly teachers using the Bible for their standard...where now there are not many standards at all. Those teachers would pray daily for their students, that they might understand simple concepts, like "As much as lieth in you, live peacably with all men." (Romans 12: 18)

Parents would be in better control of their children. We would CARE where our kids are and who they are with and what they are doing. We would KNOW what our children are hearing, seeing and learning. Our babies would not be pawned off on someone else to be cared for and raised to adulthood, while we do our own thing.

Where are the Christians who can stand up and say, "ENOUGH! No more will there be people engaged in lewd acts before my eyes on my television! We are sick of people undressing in our living room! No more shootings and stabbings in OUR home! We will not tolerate any more murders and bloodshed for us to watch! NO MORE trash on MY TV! NO MORE!"

Where is our outrage? Have we forgotten WE are the church? The CHURCH is not just a building where we go once a week to sing and pray to God. As Christians, we carry the church wherever we go. If the church is what it should be, and if the church really is US, then we should be making things better instead of being part of the problem.

Are we, the parents, an influence in the wrong direction? Are we the sickness instead of the cure? Have we gone over to the enemy's camp while wearing the title of Christian? If so, we should not be surprised when our children turn into selfish, greedy, disobedient kids who turn to bloodlust and murder. Think about it...Cain was so jealous and hostile he killed his only brother, Abel.

What happened? What went wrong? Did the first parents allow their boys to roam the fields, rearing themselves with little or no parental guidance, until one murdered the other? The Bible tells us, "Cain was wroth (meaning angry) and his countenance fell." (Genesis 4:5) There he was, can you see him? Going around long-faced and pouting and mad at the world, hating his younger brother, and his parents could not see that?

I wonder, could Adam and Eve have intervened with Godly words of counsel and encouragement. Why didn't they say something, like, "Boys, God wants us to LOVE one another." Oh my, if only they had realized the power of their INFLUENCE.

Satan is no idiot. He knew exactly who to approach in the very beginning. He knew God had not forced Adam and Eve into puppet-like submission and he recognized the power of Eve's influence; perhaps above any other influence on the whole earth. As a woman, wife and mother, SHE would be THE major creative factor for all future generations. But sadly, Eve never, ever considered the impact of her influence.

And Adam, poor weak man, never uttered a word for what was right! Adam was THE man of the house, but it appears he stood for nothing. Adam lived 930 years, but nowhere is it recorded that he ever said, "As head of this house, and this family, I am telling you, we WILL NOT eat of that fruit! Stay away from that fruit, Eve. It will kill you. Nevertheless, whether or it kills or not, we will NOT eat of it because God said not to eat it." Nowhere is it recorded that he ever told his children, "Boys, be kind to one another." He offered no resistance whatsoever. The only thing he did was, like Eve, he listened to and obeyed a voice RATHER than the voice of God.

That same insanity exists today. But, those first parents will answer for their sins and we will answer for ours. We could take the same path that Adam and Eve took, or we could take the path of Lois and Eunice found in the New Testament.

Paul wrote to Timothy, "I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in THY GRANDMOTHER, LOIS, AND THY MOTHER, EUNICE..." (2 Timothy 1:5)

Timothy grew up under the influence of Godly parents and Godly grandparents, mainly his mother Eunice and his grandmother, Lois. Paul later said to Timothy, "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ
    Jesus." (2 Tim. 3:14-15)

The conclusion of the whole matter is that Timothy was reared by the Word of God. Timothy was taught Holy scriptures even as a child. Timothy did not inherit that unfeigned (genuine, not pretended) faith. He LEARNED his faith from his family. We inherit brown hair or blue eyes, but we LEARN of God.

Parents today say of their three and four year olds, "I can't do a thing with him!"... "He's out of control!"..."She won't obey a thing I say!" The entire world is searching for answers to youth violence, blaming parents, movies, video games, television programming, the internet, peer pressure, bullies, mental illness, dysfunctional families, teachers, government officials and more.

But we must face it, parents. Test time has arrived and our school of trial and error has failed. We have been practicing wrong theories too long. But...we have failed long enough! The sooner we realize that we, as CHRISTIAN PARENTS, are the most influential people on earth, the sooner our children and grandchildren can be righteous people! But where do we turn? We look to veteran, experienced parents only to find they have read the same books and listened to Dr. Spock and Dr. Phil and all the other experts just as we have all done in our own search for help with child-rearing.

Its time to forget the "Parenting experts!" The fact is, they don't know any more than we do. Its time to get back to the basics, to God's Word and to common sense! When will we understand that God is the only" parenting" expert? The Bible contains startling concepts concerning parenting, but biblical advise is often ignored because it is considered elementary or out dated. After all, we ARE modern parents!

But - now hear this- if biblical principles can be recognized and applied in our lives and in our homes, then our success can be phenomenal! I offer that EVERY PARENT IS WRITING A BOOK, A BOOK THAT IS READ BY ALL. Our life is that book! Our children reflect what we are and what we have taught them. Or what we have not taught them.

It would be nice if there was one perfect set of parents somewhere that we could use for a pattern, but I've been unable to find them. Perhaps yours or mine comes close, but like us--they fall short.

We do know that parents are more varied than any other living species on earth. We are young and old, plain and pretty, skinny and fat, short and tall, educated and illiterate, happy and broken-hearted, compassionate and cruel, Godly and ungodly. But life is a wheel and parents are the hub that holds it together.

Parents are the major influence in all the world!

We hold the ability to influence, mold, shape and equip every child born to the human race! Think about that. It is OUR children who become the kings, the queens, the vagabonds, the evangelists, the Presidents, the Hitlers, the Einsteins, the Neros, the judges and the criminals. It is WE who bring forth and rear all of mankind!

We never retire from the job of parenting, our most difficult assignment in life. From the time that tiny bundle is placed in our arms until we breathe our last breath, we remain their parents.

    Dear Lord! Give us --
    the wisdom of Solomon,
    the meekness of Moses,
    the courage of Daniel,
and the heart of YOU, Lord!

      Preach it!!!!

I am reminded of the saying: "If you let Caesar educate your children, don't be surprised if they come back as Romans...."

      Excellent article!

Fortunately our God is so much bigger than the Government and the Schools and frankly even us. If Paul could convert Christians in Rome, we can certianly do it in the modern world. His Plan inevitably and irretrievably marches on despite our best and our worst efforts.
There Are millions of families raising the next generation of radical Christians, waiting for the opportunity to demonstrate their faith and importantly have it mean something and more importantly have it cost something.
You are correct, we are a nation of cowardly Chirstians, but when people become truly saved, then, they will lay down their lives for their brothers and the Lord will be Glorified.
We KNOW how the story ends. Satan will be defeated despite his best efforts. If I am in prison or dead, here in America, because I preached the Gospel in my workplace or home then so be it. God will sustain me or usher me in.
      Excellent article.
      God Bless.

Good article, however, I don't think it will be realized until the "Parents" heed God's words.

      2 Corinthians 6:14-18 ( KJV )
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Until Christians realize that they cannot mix with the world we will continue down the present path.

How very true! I feel my lifetime has witnessed the wholesale unraveling of the family, the basis of continued human civilization and the very fabric and backbone of the Church.Seems this world cannot possibly have much time left, in light of this awful truth.Well stated and well done!!!

If only we could grasp the importance and power of parental influence!

I was reading back over some of the articles I had written for his board, and had forgotten about this one. I'm pulling it back out, because it is more relevant today than when I wrote it, back in 2009. Parents, we are living today in a world with a generation of young people in serious trouble.
