  • Two Atheists Were Arguing. So Who Won The Argument?

I wrote the story below to poke fun at Atheists whose gods are Their Own Selves,
Empiricism, Rationalism, Secularism, Logic, Science, and what THEY claim is
    Rational Argumentation.

Its a dumb story but it does make a serious point.

So relax, read my short crazy story, and have a little harmless fun.

A Very Short Story About John And Bob and Tom.

    by JAG

There are two atheists that are having an argument over contradictory propositions.

    John Atheist and Bob Atheist.

They are having a private debate in their own thread.

They are now on page 40 in the thread and they are not writing short posts,
but long drawn out lengthy screeds.

They both claim victory and claim that they have established a high degree of
Probability that their position is the correct one, and that their opponent's
    position is incorrect.

I have utterly defeated you says John. My arguments stand at a 90% Probability
of certainty and your arguments stand only at a 40% Probability of certainty and
here are my reasons to support what I say.

No, all that is incorrect replies Bob. My arguments stand at a 90% Probability of
certainty and your arguments only at a 40% Probability of certainty and here
are my reasons to support what I say.

    _____________

The two atheists, John and Bob, decide to meet in Real World and continue
    their arguments.

They do this and they continue to argue back and forth for 10 days until they
    are near exhaustion.

Neither John or Bob will budge an inch.

How can we settle this, asks John.

Bob replies, let's go to the academic community and let them decide.

You mean we take a Majority Vote within the academic community?

Well no, replies John that would ruin our scholarly reputations and we'd
be howled out of the room because everybody knows that taking a
Majority Vote can not settle who has won an argument. So my Ph.D's
against your Ph.D's is not a very smart plan.

By the way Bob, again I have won and you have lost this argument.

No John, again you have lost and I have won this argument.

I know how we can settle this, said Bob, we can go and put our case
    before this organization:

The International World Authority That Has The Power To Decide Who
Has, Or Has Not, Presented The Most Plausible Arguments.

That's a great idea replied John, but where are they located?

I don't know said Bob, lets ask Tom where we can find them.

So they asked Tom, but Tom said Listen fellas there is no such
organization in the world as that, and you both should know this.

John and Bob both said well okay Tom, I guess you are right about
that, but what in the world are we going to do now?

How can we settle who has won this argument with the highest
    degree of Plausibility?

I know how we can settle it, said John. We can let Tom settle it.

Okay said Bob, we will let Tom settle this.

Okay Tom, which one of us has won this argument?

Tom replied I declare that John has won this argument with the
highest degree of Plausibility. I declare that John has won and
    that Bob has lost.

And so it came to pass that it was forever settled by Tom. John
had won, and Bob had lost.

Ahh victory is sweet said John. I love it when I win and can know
for certain that I have won.

    The End.

    LOL

    _______

Yeah, I told you it was a dumb story, but it did make a few serious
points if you stop and think about it seriously.

The takeaway point, in case you missed it, is that Atheists are
not as smart as they think they are.

      So true.

That's why I wrote the following as my introductory paragraph:

The story reminds me of the case of John and James who wanted to sit at the right and left hand of Christ. Everyone can read for themselves what the consequences were and their verdict. Christ seeks love in his children that we do not exalt ourselves above others like the Gentiles, but that we respect one another.

I do not want to condemn you for writing, yet I feel that we should manifest the attitude of Christ and show love at all times. Jesus knew that the Pharisees and sinners were doing wrong, yet he did not mock them. Remember! We are all God's creation and need a helping hand that can raise us up and lead us to the truth. There is a good lesson we can learn from the mistake Elijah also made when he mocked the Baal prophets. After the revelation of God to his people Israel, everyone went up to their land because of the great rain that was coming. Arriving there, Elijah hears that the queen wants to cut off his life, and he flees. It was a lesson for me not to mock man who was created in the image of God, but rather to correct them in the love of God.

          Thank you for your comments.
I do not know of any Bible verse that commands us to mock anyone.
The Lord Jesus in Matthew chapter 23 used some very strong
name-calling directed to His enemies the Pharisees and Teachers
Of The Law, He called then snakes and vipers. This is not a proof
text that says we ought to do the same to our enemies. And most
certainly NOT to our fellow Christians.

Your point about Elijah is not warranted by what the actual text says.
It does not say and does not even slightly imply that Elijah was even
1% wrong in mocking the prophets of Baal. You concluded that, in
my view, because of your assumed position on this issue.

I will confess I am not certain where the line is --- where when we
cross it we have gone to far. I err on the side of caution and try
to avoid mocking anyone and also try to avoid ad hom. name-calling.

Thanks again for your contribution to the thread.

By the way, I once wrote a piece titled "I learned My Name-calling From Jesus"

          Here tis.
What is your opinion of this piece below?

          JAG Writes:
Other titles for this piece could be:

"Jesus And His Apostles Taught Me How To Use Ad Hominem
          And Name-Calling"___Chris Christian

"The Lord Jesus And Many Biblical Hero's Taught Me How To
          Use Name-Calling."__Chris Christian

Let me announce up-front my position: I disagree with Chris Christian.
          I do not believe such as {1} through {6}
          below is moral justification
for using ad hominem as in calling people for
          example "dogs" and
"pigs" and "snakes" and "vipers" and "stupid" or
          a "child of Hell"
          or worse names.

          Introduction:
A fellow Christian, we will call him Chris Christian, recently told me
there was Biblical warrant for name-calling {ad hominem} in the Bible.
He said that the Lord Jesus and His Apostles and some of the Old
Testament's hero's used name-calling and therefore we have a Biblical
warrant to follow their example and do likewise. He said that we had
Biblical warrant for calling certain people "stupid" and "idiots" and "fools"
and "morons" because these names are mild compared to
the name-calling used by the Lord Jesus and other Biblical hero's.
          He said that we also
have Biblical warrant for calling certain
          people "snakes" and "vipers" and
          "dogs" and "pigs" and "stupid"
          and "hypocrites." See below {1} - {6}.

Chris Christian presented some Bible verses that he claimed as support
for his position. {1} through {6} below:

          {1} Mathew Chapter 23:
The Lord Jesus talking to His enemies:
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees,
          you hypocrites!
You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you
have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell
as you are. You blind guides!
You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside
but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything
unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people
as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and
wickedness. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees,
you hypocrites! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will
          you escape being
          condemned to hell?
___The Lord Jesus in Matthew chapter 23

          {2}

          Luke 3:7
          and

          Matthew 3:7
"John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him,
          "You brood of vipers!
Who warned you to flee from the
          coming wrath?___John The Baptist

{3} " Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing
          their own opinions."___Proverbs 18:2 NIV

{4}"Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates
correction is stupid" ___Proverbs 12:1 NIV

{5} "Outside are the dogs"___The Apostle John

          Revelation 22:15 NIV
          John calls some humans "dogs."

{6} "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to
pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear
          you to pieces.___The Lord Jesus

          Matthew 7:6
The Lord Jesus says here that some humans are "dogs" and "pigs."
ad hominem - an attack directed against the person, rather
than against their argument or their position

          Add these
Here are some Bible verses that might relate in some way to that piece up there.

"Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit
should restore that person gently But watch yourselves, or you also may be
