  • Jesus's Name

In Matthew, chapter 1, verses 21-23 it says his name is Jesus, but then says Immanuel, which is it? Why two different names?

Peter had a bunch of names also.

Matthew 8:14 "And when Jesus was come into Peter's house"

Matthew 16:17 "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona"

Acts 15:14 "Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. "

I Corinthians 1:12 "Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas
    "

Being known by multiple names wasn't an oddity in the Bible Times.
Jesus is YHWH the eternal Great I AM.
    • Jesus said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I AM from above: ye are of this world; I AM not of this world. if ye believe not that I AM He, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:23
    • " I YHWH the LORD, the first, and with the last; I AM He. Thus saith YHWH the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer YHWH the LORD of hosts; I AM the first, and I AM the last; and beside me there is no God.” Isaiah 41:4,44:6
    • "And [the son of Man] laid his right hand upon me, saying Fear not; I AM the first and the last: I AM He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I AM alive for evermore. These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive" Rev 1:17, 2:8
    • "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I AM Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." Rev 22:12

God has many names. While many prefer Jehovah, I'll just use the letters YHWH.

YHWH-Jireh, YHWH-Rapha, YHWH-M'Kadesh, and many more throughout the Tanach. (OT) Each has meaning, each contains the root YHWH. So in Matthew we see him as Emanuel, simply, "God with us." Or, Yahushua (Jesus), which means "YHWH has become our salvation."

Many names, many titles...all declaring his power, authority, omni-presence, omni-potence, eternal nature.

      Peace.

Thanks David, I was going to get to the O.T. too, but you beat me to it.
