  • Psalms 91:8

    What does this verse mean?

8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

    Scott,

i think it refers to this passage in the OT:

Isa 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

    Shalom,
    Tanja
Jer 6:16 Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
2Jn 1:9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
If it's not done out of unselfish love, then it's hardly righteous.

I see it as a continuation of the theme of the first seven verses, particularly verse 7 - the protection God provides to those who dwell in His secret place. The bad things that happen to the wicked will not happen to them...they will only see it and not experience it.
May the vision of You be the death of me.

It may be Messianic seeing as the Jews probably used this Psalm to predict the Messiah appearing on the wing of the temple and throwing himself down.

The underlying message here is that those who trust in the Lord will not suffer the fate of the wicked. They may witness the judgment that God brings upon them, but they will not be harmed by it.

"Because you have made the LORD--my refuge, the Most High--your dwelling place, no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent." (Psa 91:9-10 HCSB)

See Psalm 37:34 and Malachi 1:5.
