  • Things that are Shaken??

The writer of the book of Hebrews states in the 12th chapter the 27th verse that things that are shaken may be removed that things that are not may remain. What are the things that are shaken?

If you read it in context it gives you some clues:

    Hebrews 12
25 Take care not to refuse the one who is speaking! For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less shall we, if we reject the one who warns from heaven? 26 Then his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven too.” 27 Now this phrase “once more” indicates the removal of what is shaken, that is, of created things, so that what is unshaken may remain. 28 So since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us give thanks, and through this let us offer worship pleasing to God in devotion and awe. 29 For our God is indeed a devouring fire.

Any other religious beliefs will be shaken out of place..removed, because they don't stand up to the one true gospel message.

Adam Clarke's bible commentary says this:

    Verse 27

The removing of those things that are shaken - The whole of the Jewish polity, which had been in a shaken state from the time that Judea had fallen under the power of the Romans.

As of things that are made - That is, subjects intended to last only for a time. God never designed that the Jewish religion should become general, nor be permanent.

Those things which cannot be shaken - The whole Gospel system, which cannot be moved by the power of man.

May remain - Be permanent; God designing that this shall be the last dispensation of his grace and mercy, and that it shall continue till the earth and the heavens are no more.
    Verse 28

We receiving a kingdom - The Gospel dispensation, frequently termed the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven, because in it God reigns among men, and he reigns in the hearts of them that believe, and his kingdom is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Which cannot be moved - Which never can fail, because it is the last dispensation.

    Hope that helps.

    God bless
"People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; We drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; We drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated?" - D A Carson

Anything that is not fitly joined together and built upon the foundation of Christ Himself can and will be shaken. All of the methods, tactics and traditions of men promoted in His name will be exposed for the vanity they are. Every plant that the heavenly Father has not planed will be rooted up. Every mountain of self exaltation will be made low and every valley of humility will be raised. The crooked ways will be made straight and the obscure places made plain. The glory of the Lord will be revealed.
All flesh will see it together.
Mal 3:16 Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.

I think it would be better if I moved this thread to the forum for Apologetics. I realize that the answer to the question "things that are shaken?" is more doctrinal than a subject for chat. If you're interested in the kingdom of God head over to the forum for Apologetics.

Heb 12:27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken-that is, things that have been made-in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.
Heb 12:28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,
Heb 12:29 for our God is a consuming fire.

          Greetings Bro Berryl!,
The writer of Hebrews tells us what was to be shaken in the next verse. They were receiving a kingdom which could not be shaken. Therefore what was being shaken was the physical kingdom, the Old Covenant, the Temple, Jerusalem itself, anything having to do with the Law. Whatever was being shaken was in the process of being shaken when the writer wrote Hebrews. It was the old Covenant about to be dissolved. The temple was about to be destroyed, Jerusalem was about to burn, all of judgements of the Laws of Blessings and Curses in Deuteronomy were about to be brought upon Israel. AD 70 was about to happen. What would remain was a kingdom that could not be shaken, a spiritual kingdom, the new Covenant.

Heb 8:13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
