    Thanks Chad for that.

Do you think there is any significance to the numbers given in these verses? We know the Bible uses numbers ( I.e 7, 40... Etc)

Just curious. Are your you going to finish numbers?
“A” cannot be “A” & not “A” at the same time.

Yes, I each week I will be going onto the next chapter until the end of the book of numbers. I don't see anything special about the numbers, but there are a lot of special things that can be learnt in the book of numbers.

          JBF Commentary Numbers 3:40-51

Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel, etc.
The principle on which the enumeration of the Levites had been made was now to be applied to the other tribes.

The number of their male children, from a month old and upward, was to be reckoned, in order that a comparison might be instituted with that of the Levites, for the formal adoption of the latter as substitutes for the first-born.

The Levites, amounting to twenty-two thousand, were given in exchange for an equal number of the first-born from the other tribes, leaving an excess of two hundred seventy-three; and as there were no substitutes for these, they were redeemed at the rate of five shekels for each (Num_18:15, Num_18:16).

Every Israelite would naturally wish that his son might be redeemed by a Levite without the payment of this tax, and yet some would have to incur the expense, for there were not Levites enough to make an equal exchange.

Jewish writers say the matter was determined by lot, in this manner: Moses put into an urn twenty-two thousand pieces of parchment, on each of which he wrote “a son of Levi,” and two hundred seventy-three more, containing the words, “five shekels.”

These being shaken, he ordered each of the first-born to put in his hand and take out a slip. If it contained the first inscription, the boy was redeemed by a Levite; if the latter, the parent had to pay.

The ransom-money, which, reckoning the shekel at half a crown, would amount to $2.50 each, was appropriated to the use of the sanctuary.

The excess of the general over the Levitical first-born is so small, that the only way of accounting for it is, by supposing those first-born only were counted as were males remaining in their parents’ household, or that those first-born only were numbered which had been born since the departure from Egypt, when God claimed all the first-born as his special property.

(Num 8:2 KJV) Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick.

(Num 8:3 KJV) And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof over against the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses.

(Num 8:4 KJV) And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had showed Moses, so he made the candlestick.

(Num 8:6 KJV) Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.

The service of the Levite was for 25 years from the age of 25 to 50.

(Num 8:26 KJV) But shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge.

                            Numbers Chapter 10

(Num 10:1 KJV) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Trumpets for calling the community together

(Num 10:2 KJV) Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

The trumpets were used for the calling of the assembly and the journeying of the camps.

(Num 10:3 KJV) And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

(Num 10:4 KJV) And if they blow but with one trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.

One blow of the trumpet was a signal for the princes of Israel to gather.

(Num 10:5 KJV) When ye blow an alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.

When the trumpet was blown once as an alarm, all the camps of the East side shall go forward.

Alarm H 8643. teruw'ah, ter-oo-aw'; from H7321; clamor, i.e. acclamation of joy or a battle-cry; espec. clangor of trumpets, as an alarum:--alarm, blow (-ing) (of, the) (trumpets), joy, jubile, loud noise, rejoicing, shout (-ing), (high, joyful) sound (-ing).

(Num 10:6 KJV) When ye blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

When the trumpet was blown twice as an alarm, all the camps of the South side shall go forward.

(Num 10:7 KJV) But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm.

(Num 10:8 KJV) And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations.

(Num 10:10 KJV) Also in the day of your gladness, and in your solemn days, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; that they may be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God.

They wanted the food that was found in Egypt, yet the circumstances of traveling in the desert, and the desert becuase of its environment did not have the foods they desired such as fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.

(Num 11:8 KJV) And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

(Num 11:9 KJV) And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
