2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, THEN will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”

Proverbs 21:1, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases”

My brothers and sisters in Christ. If you have professed faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior you should be concerned for our country. Jesus warned us in Matthew 12:25, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.

At Springfield, Illinois on June 16, 1858, Abraham Lincoln address more than 1,000 delegates for the Republican State Convention. At 8:00 p.m. Lincoln delivered this address to his Republican colleagues in the Hall of Representatives. The title reflects part of the speech's introduction, "A house divided against itself cannot stand," a concept familiar to Lincoln's audience as a statement by Jesus Christ as recorded in all three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke).

Surveying the moral and political landscape in America today, Rev. Franklin Graham said God was removed from the schools and homosexual marriage made “the law of the land,” and quoting his father Billy Graham who said, “unless America turns back to God, repents of its sin and experiences spiritual revival, we will fail as a nation. I do not believe any politician, Democrat or Republican, can turn our country around.”

(1) He is concerned for our country as I am and those who profess salvation through faith in Jesus Christ should also be concerned. Jesus warned us in Matthew 12:25, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.”

(2) We have been for some time now a very deeply divided country; however, it has gotten much worse in recent weeks and months.

(3) We are a very confused country. Many don’t seem to know “right from wrong,” and some even “call evil good, and good evil.” (Isaiah 5:20) We know the source because “God is not the author of confusion.”

(4) We are a very sinful country. Examples could be cited, and any discerning person knows this to be true. Sensuality and immorality are prevalent and abortion follows suit, with well over a million still occurring annually. “Idolatry” abounds, with today’s big three being materialism, hedonism and naturalism/secularism.

(5) In the midst of this God’s people have become increasing worldly and apathetic. We desperately need God’s help and intervention. As the great hymn says, “America, America, God shed His grace on thee…” We need that grace now in order to continue.

Closing thoughts:

As citizens of the United States you cannot deny it. Our nation is in trouble and we are facing peril. You can turn on your television or scroll through your Internet newsfeeds right now and see that there is so much violence, corruption, fear and hatred in the hearts of those around us. We are contending with issues that are causing the very foundation of our country to crumble as stated by Jesus in Matthew 12:25.

In the face of all this, it’s very important that we pray not only for the healing of our nation, but also for our president and all those in government leadership who are in positions to make change happen. 1 Timothy 2:1-3 says that we are to pray, intercede and give thanks for kings and all people in authority. This is God’s command to every believer today. Praying for godly leaders is productive towards God’s plan and purpose for our nation. The Bible says the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord. He can turn it however he wants, so prayers are important.

As God was able to force Babylon's ancient king Nebuchadnezzar to worship him, there is no ruler on the earth today who is immune to God's authority. My beloved, they rule by his permission, and one day they all will answer for how they use or abused their power! Moreover, because God is in control over leaders, He exhorts us (1 Timothy 2:1-2) to pray for and about these rulers so that we may lead peaceful and Godly lives; not just here in America but also for our Christian brothers and sisters in North Korea, China, The Sudan, Iraq, Israel and other nations of the world.

Prayers by God’s people really do change the world because God the Lord Almighty is in and has always been in control. He is God; He is the King of kings! He is the Lord of Lords. He is the Ruler of Rulers and the lawmaker supreme. Every government answers to him, and every person will do the same. I leave you today with these words penned by a Christian musician "God is in control, though Godless men conspire, His will unfolds, though mortal man is sometimes left to doubt, His ways are higher than our ways, and even through the fire, take heart and know, God is in control."

It’s impossible to rightly govern our Nation without God and the Bible.
