  • What does the following mean?

The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 1 Cor 15:26

What does destroyed mean and how can death be destroyed?

And I assume that verse is relative to v"s 54,55

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, (Hades) where is thy victory?

Death is not a thing that can be physically destroyed, so Paul is speaking with a figure of speech.

Those who belong to Jesus have been raised from death, never to die again. Since they will never die again, 'death' ceases to exist; it is destroyed.

You are correct to read verse 26 in parallel with verses 54-55: When the deathly (mortal) will have put on deathlessness (immortality), death is destroyed.

All men will one day be resurrected (1st Cor.15:22). Christ first, then Christian and Jew at His Second Coming (v.23). Then the rest of the dead a thousand years later for the White Throne judgement (v.24; Rev.20:5). That means that there will be no more dead on, or under the earth. Death is truly destroyed. It is one thing if there are no dead. In this case, death is always a possibility. It lurks in the shadows. But when every one of billions of dead have been raised to life, death, the last ENEMY, is truly destroyed. It once had power, a then there will come a time when it is defeated and annihilated.
