Back in Bible times, what 'legally' married two people together? Today we have marriage licenses and such, but what made them married back then?
I've heard people say that if you love someone enough and know they are the one you want to spend your life with, then you are technically married. So, I was just wondering if anyone knew about this or what they thought.

If you publically declare yourself married to your peers then you are married under God. Other than that, follow the legal requirements of your land including permits and whatever.

Many here and elsewhere will put forward the view that when one has sex one is married before God, but i disagree based on the biblical term of fornication (pornea) which is when people have sex outside of marriage (and other such sexual sin).

      Thank you very much!

I was wondering if you have any passages that goes along with that?

sure, go to biblegateway.com and put in the words 'sexual immorality' (for NIV) or 'fornication' (for KJV) and more passages you can poke a stick at will come out at you. The word in greek for these is pornea, meaning all sexual activity outside of marriage. The bulk of the passages in your search will deal with this issue. Thus, if sex seperate from marriage is a sin, then marriage is a declaration of committment of some kind before God and peers. Regarding that, also type 'marriage' into the search and look at what it entails OT style. Marriage is about the father giving the daughter over to the husband. This is a covenant between the two men as much as the man and woman, the father giving the daughter he loves over to a man he trusts her with.

Jesus was very clear that feelings or living together do not constitute marriage when he told the woman in John 4, "you have had five husbands, and the man you are currently living with is not your husband."

In Israel, marriage involved and covenant/contract between the two families in question, in which both agreed upon the marriage of the two inviduals. It was also mandatory that the marriage be declared to the whol community that the couple was living in, and the community had the responsibility to hold the two people to the covenant of marriage.
