    I have a friend who Iíve kept in contact with since high school. He used to have a heroin addiction, but later sought help and recovered. Despite forgoing his severe opiate dependency, he wasnít able to kick his smoking habit. In fact, Iíve heard similar things from former methamphetamine addicts: they were able to get rid of their crystal meth addiction, but they still smoke. For this reason, I would argue that nicotine is the most difficult drug to quit.

    Myself, Iíve never ever used the hard drugs (and donít want to, seeing how itís ruined so many lives), but I struggle with a nicotine addiction. I donít smoke, but instead use tobacco pouches. My dependency on nicotine has persisted for about five and a half years now, and every day I regret taking my first dip of smokeless tobacco.

    Why do I want to quit nicotine? Because itís dangerous. I did some research on the Internet and found out that the average lifespan of a nicotine user is 62 years of age. For a heavy dipper like myself (I go through an entire can every day, sometime a can and a half), the average lifespan would probably be shorter. I donít want to die earlier from mouth cancer.

    Iíve tried to alleviate the headaches and cravings from nicotine withdrawal by using nicotine gum. Unfortunately, this doesnít do anything. All it does it change the route of transmission; it wonít get rid of the actual addiction. Same with the nicotine skin patches.

    Were you ever a nicotine addict? How did you quit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      I smoked for 45 years, and quit cold turkey. I tried the gum, the patches, switched to pouches (they weren't pouches then tho). None of that worked. As you said, they only changed the method of transmission. I chewed nic gum like you wouldn't believe.
      How did I quit? After trying literally hundreds of times, I finally got really angry with myself for putting myself through the suffering YET AGAIN, and determined that I was either going to quit this time, or smoke the rest of my life. I was NOT going to go through the withdrawals, the anxiety and all the rest ANYMORE!!! LAST TIME!
      You see, I finally became DETERMINED to do it. And that was what I needed to do all along.
      The withdrawals last about three days. But that is not the only hurdle. You must also figure out what to do with yourself during those times that you would have smoked, or chewed, or whatever. You have to replace the habit with something else (preferably NOT food unless you want to put on 50 pounds). It takes a while, weeks, to get over the habit. It may be more difficult that the addiction itself.
      Years and years later, I occasionally still smell a cigarette and it smells good. That old desire rises up. But I know that I cannot have even 1 puff (it would probably choke me up anyway) or I'd be right back in the mire.

        Kahtar, Your words have encouraged me to quit. After I read your post I have decided to quit cold turkey. Will you pray for me to make it one day without smoking?
