  • I have learned to problem with Christianity

In aspen, this weekend, I learned what is wrong with Christianity. I have heard many things, in the past, but this one was new to me.

This man was trying so hard to sound intellectual about it and was telling this to a person that has some faith, I do not know how much or what this person believes. He knew this lady and it seemed like a family member, maybe.

His statement was, "The problem with Christianity is it's no's. The yes's are all right, but the no's are all wrong. Christianity is too negative"

Really? Hmm, ok, I can see how an ignorant person will believe ths. His statements told me that he was a person that listened to someone make these points and had not cracked open the bible to see if they were right.

And, no, I did not say anything to him.It was a private conversation and me butting in would not have helped. If anything, it would have just turned him off even more. This person was obviously one that would only listen to someone that he has decided was worthy of listening too.

Now, many people say Christianity is a "negative religion." They say, "The bible is full of "thou shalt not..." Of course it is. It's easier to state what you should NOT do, then to write all the things you should. Look at your country's laws and how they're written.

Funny thing is all the "Thou shalt not's" is that they're in the OT and were written for the Jews, when you get right down to it. But let's now look at the big ten. There are fewer "thou shalt not's" than "thou shall's". Ever notice that?

Then there is the big one, that the Christ himself said,

Mar 12:30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' Mar 12:31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

Do you see the "shall not" in there? No? Are you sure? Hmmm. Interesting. WAIT! What's that He says at the end? "There is NO OTHER commandment greater than these?"

Nah, what would God know? I mean this guy is obviously smarter than God, right?

I bet this person is also someone that would say that we need to understand radical muslim's and learn that their beliefs are not violent. He probably also tells Christians "Don't force your beliefs on me" after he makes these absurd statements and Christians try to clarify things for him. Yes I'm assuming, but my opinion is based on 15+ years of being a Christian and 25 years of not believing in God.

Well, the word "no" is part of life, something we learn as young children. There are many no-nos. Yes, its negative, but that's reality.

Anyway, what's wrong with "Thou shalt not murder" and "thou shalt not commit adultery".

Is it really negative to tell someone its wrong to commit murder, wrong to sleep with someone else's spouse, wrong to steal, etc.

I agree that many people who criticize Christianity, have never seriously studied the Bible. They may "think" they know what the Bible says, but they've never seriously studied it.

First, lucky you, being in Aspen.
Second, I totally get you. People want quick easy ways to write off the Word.
Third, (this is where I disagree slightly)... the quoted text is great as a beginning precept. The people who want to write off Christianity for its NO's are doing so a little more specifically though. For instance... I talked to a friend about much the same thing and his response was "Ok, so all those positive commands aside, can I (a) marry a guy (b) have sex with a girlfriend (c) enjoy my party scene, etc etc."

When we zoom in close, Christianity does have a lot of no's. Its nothing we have to hide from.

And like I said, it's easier to to note the things NOT to do than the things it is OK to do. This guy didn't even understand or notice the amount of times he said "no" regarding his beliefs. He spent time trying to show how Christianity was WRONG instead of trying to show how his belief was RIGHT?

And pardon my spelling on the title of the thread. Maye a mod will change the "to" to "the"

I don't know. SInce I've been on this site I've learned a lot of new no's and some I already know such as:
          No drugs,
          no drinking,
          no divorce,
          no listening to seculur music
no to reading any Bible other than KJV
no fornification, homesexuality, porn, lust, ect
no breaking laws, obey your parents as well
no watching secular tv or movies
          no cussing
          no gossiping
no women in leadership roles in the Church
          no to secular friends
no to sexy clothes, short skirts extra
no to checking out the opposite sex
          no to lust
          no white lies

          then the must:
          prayer daily
          do everything to praise God
          dress modestly

I'm not saying that every christain on this site has the same list of no's, but I have seen a lot of what you can't do on this site or you are not going to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I've heard more of the law and very little of Grace on this website.

Yes there are a number of "don'ts" in the Bible but as a wise man once said "If you do the do's you don't have time to do the "don'ts." And if you could, you wouldn't. So you can't, so it's cool."
sigpicLord, now let your servant depart in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation.

Please reread what I said about WHY the bible has the no's in it.

And some of the "no's" that you've listed are from very few members. I can tell due to what no's you've listed.

Try going to what Jesus said, and I posted that.

So many "Christians" are spewing untruths and causing others to stumble. They justify sin and live sinful lives all the while condemning others who do the same.

So many "Christians" are like the Pharisees

                    And Cloudwalker, excellent post!
