  • How do you do about reading?

I know we got a lot of readers on this board so my question is how do you go about reading. What I mean is do you read several books by the same author or do you just read their most famous book or one you think sounds good and then move on to a different author and do the same? As you can see I'm currently reading The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. When I'm done I have to decide whether I want to read his next book The Last Gentleman or go ahead to a different author (I really want to read Norman Mailer, Thomas Pynchon, and Don DeLillo).

So how do you go about reading? By the author or by the book?

Usually book-by-book, although also I normally read a couple books at a time, particularly if I'm in the middle of a really long one (Infinite Jest). I actually have DeLillo's Underworld, but it's also about eight hundred pages long so maybe I'll read something shorter once I finish IJ.
"We are symbols and inhabit symbols; workmen, work, and tools, words and things, birth and death, all are emblems; but we sympathize with the symbols, and being infatuated with the economical uses of things, we do not know that they are thoughts." - Emerson, "The Poet" (Essays, Second Series)

I go almost exclusively by book.
