  • Discussion Wordpress backup plugins.

Because of the subject of my site, I know someone will eventually hack it. I have had previous sites hacked. Anyway, since the servers have that backup system (raid 10 I think), do I need to worry about getting a plugin for backups?

If so, what plugin should I use? There are many. I installed one, not sure if I set it up right though. It says that it backs up in restore points. Might be to advanced for my needs.

    Re: Wordpress backup plugins.

RAID only makes the server more reliable. But here's what it does not/cannot do:

    1. We do a backup of your site every 2-3 days -> a remote server far away (so it's really safe) --- a good thing

    2. Let's say hacker hacks your site today and we do the backup tomorrow and you only discover it was hacked next week this time.... oops! By now, our "very safe" backup is also contaminated and as useless as your site -- big problem!

We usually keep two backups -- one no older than 3 days and the other can be up to a month old to try to mitigate point #2 above.

    BUT ...

Every month or so we replace the oldest backup and then both are only a few days old ... and believe me when I say Murphys law always kicks in round about then.

If I recall, there is a WP plugin that will backup your MySQL data daily and send it to you as an email attachment. I highly recommend using something like that.

        2 more questions:

        1) What are ping back posts (I get them every so often)?
        2) Should I leave them up or delete them?

Ping back is on this page: http://yecheadquarters.org/?p=342

            Re: Wordpress backup plugins.

I found a backup plugin that is real easy to use: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/ Once installed how you get to it is through your tools menu.

There is nothing to enter unless you want to change the e-mail address it gets mailed to. It will also do a backup on the server and the destination is already preconfigured for you. You can also set it to how often to do backups. I set mine to once a day.

My question is: Is once a day enough, to much, or to little? Right now I don;t have much posting traffic, just a bunch of lookers and readers. And I average one page per day put up. Some days I put up three.

Once a week is usually OK if you don't have a lot of new stuff being added. The real question is, how much data are you prepared to loose and offset that against the problem and hassle of storing/saving the data on your side each time the email with the backup arrives. Coupled to that is the fact that if the backups are sent to you by email, daily backups will soon slow down your mail client unless you remove the emails.

For most people loosing a weeks data is not a major train smash and if you happen to do a major new posting yourself, just do that one manually.
