I have not found thy works perfect – Perfect means fulfill, fill, be full, or complete. Perfect works are works that have a full result and complete end. They are works that conclude with the exact result God intended. Those kind of works are only possible under the perfect direction of the Holy Spirit. Since the church at Sardis had little or no interaction with God's Spirit and no ear for His message their works could not be perfect. Our works have little chance of being perfect for the same reason. Far to many of us follow our own reasoning going after the results and goals we decide are important rather than allowing God to direct us. We simply fail to grasp that in most cases it's not going to be possible to completely understand what God is trying to accomplish through our obedience. It will fall into the categories of reaching the lost and edifying the saved, but will probably be beyond our comprehension. Isa 55:8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Many are more interested in themselves, their goals, their reputation and legacy rather than in just being obedient to God. It's pride, a desire to make our own path and justify our selves before others that drives most of us. Jesus said to the religious leaders of His day in Luke 16:15 ...Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Unless we are truly walking with God our reasoning, methods and actions will seldom be under the direction of His Spirit. Perfect works can only be done in complete subjection to God. The church at Sardis was far from that. The thing to remember here is pride always gets in the way of perfect works. Ps 25:9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. Pride was keeping the church at Sardis from perfect works.
before God – Before means in the sight of or in the presence of. Prov 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Not only does God see everything we do, but He sees why we do it, He sees how it will affect others and what our obedience to Him will accomplish in others. Those are good reasons we should be acting solely under His direction.
3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard – Obviously at one time this church had received and heard the truth. Remembering would be a key for their revival. John the Baptist's ministry according to Mal 3:1 was to prepare the way of the Lord Jesus. One day as John stood near water speaking to those who gathered there Jesus came to him and he proclaimed in John 1:29 ...Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. On that day John was absolutely sure who Jesus was. A few years later John was in prison. We find this in Luke 7:19 ...John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? Jesus' response is found in Luke 7:22 ...Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. John knew what the Christ was going to come and do. The key to his renewal or revival would be remembering. To the nation of Israel who had lost their way God said in Jer 6:16 ...Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. I've heard many sermons from that verse. Most speak of the old paths as being the paths of 10, 20, 50, 100 or 2000 years ago. God is not asking us to look back or go back in time. The old paths are the ancient ones laid out by God in His word. God was asking Israel to look to His declaration about how they should think, look, live, act and make decisions. Revival is a return to the declaration of God, which is His Word. Only then can one find true rest. Rest in the Websters 1828 dictionary is defined as quiet; repose; a state free from disturbance; a state of reconciliation to God. Many Christians are living worrisome anxious lives when they could have rest. A state of rest can help us to do perfect works and to suffer persecution with peace and joy in our hearts. Remembering and returning will always be apart of real revival. Some of the saddest words in the Bible are found in man's response to God's command to walk in the old paths. Jer 6:16 ...But they said, We will not walk therein. We know what they said, but what do you say?
hold fast – Hold fast means to observe, watch and preserve. The word of God is the most precious possession we have. As a child of God living in this world it's the only tangible part of our inheritance. Examine what you do with the Bible each day to see how important it is to you. Without it we are lost in the darkness without direction. Yet in the houses of many Christians the Bible is almost completely ignored, treated like a fire extinguisher only to be brought out in case of emergency. It seems all we're preserving is our right to do as we choose. Yet the Bible tells us in 1 Cor 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. How can we glorify God in our body and in our spirit apart from practicing the truths and principles found in the Word of God?
