Proverbs 31

Are you a Proverbs 31 person?

For as much as Proverbs 31 is about the godly wife or the “Proverbs 31 woman,” there is so much more to it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, we can all glean truth from this final chapter of Proverbs. Why? Because this is a picture of godly family life. These are characteristics we should all employ in our lives, whether we’re a husband, wife, child, or even unmarried.

Through the picture of a godly wife, we are shown four key traits that should characterize the life of a godly person. First, she is trustworthy. She is the kind of woman that her husband and others can trust. Both she and her husband are respected in the community. Second, this woman is responsible. She is fiscally responsible and makes sure her family is fed, clothed, and well taken care of. Third, she is charitable. When she encounters someone in need, she is ready to lend a helping hand. Finally, she is a godly woman. She makes God and his Word a priority in her life, which is also noticed by all.

Of all the traits, her godliness is the most important. The Proverbs 31 woman can only live this kind of life with God’s wisdom in hand. Sure, there are lots of people who are trustworthy, responsible, and charitable without God in their lives, but that is because even without God they are still living by godly principles. Yet, without godliness it’s all for not. Godliness and a desire for godly wisdom are paramount for living out the kind of life described in all of Proverbs; and, without the Holy Spirit we are more foolish than wise.

Today, read this chapter. Does it describe your life? If not, ask the Lord for his wisdom so you can live according to his Word as a wise man or woman.
