    Bible Study Minute 5/23/18 - Ahab's Demise (1 Kings 21-22)

    1 Kings 21-22

Do you have yes men or God men in your life?

In 1 Kings 21-22 weíre shown the end of king Ahabís life and reign as king over Israel. What we see most in these two chapters is the type of people Ahab chose to surround himself with. Along with his own sinful acts & desires, the actions of those around him eventually brought about his demise. You see, Ahab was surrounded by nothing buy yes men who did whatever they could to please the king.

We see this first in his wife Jezebel in 1 Kings 21. After failing to purchase Nabothís vineyard Ahab is sulking. Seeing this, Jezebel devises an evil scheme so her husband can take possession of the field. This act results in Nabothís death. And for what? Just so Ahab could be happy?

Some time later Ahab partners with Jehoshaphat (Judahís king) to reclaim the Ramoth-gilead area from Syria. Before they go into battle Jehoshaphat rightly wants to consult the Lord. So, Ahab calls in 400 prophets who all assure victory, essentially telling him what he wants to hear.

What we find in Ahabís life are very few people who are willing to speak against him and tell him Godís truth. The few people who did were kept at an armís distance so he didnít have to listen. First there is Elijah, his constant adversary, who condemns him for Jezebelís acts. Then with Jehoshaphat wanting a second opinion the prophet Micaiah enters and warns against going to battle, even suggesting that the Lord incited these false prophets to speak as a judgment against Ahab.

Even though, in a rare instance, Ahab repents at Elijahís words, his failure to listen to godly counsel is his downfall. He has Micaiah jailed and goes into battle anyway, which results in his death, as both prophets foretold.

Consider Ahabís life and your own. Look at the people who are willing to speak Godís truth to you. Do you keep them close or push them away?

Why oh why didn't he marry a Godly Hebrew woman?

Why did he go to a pagan country and bring home a wife that was steeped in deadly zeal of worshipping Baal? I've never understood that.

Well, none of the kings of Israel followed the Lord, so it's not like they were even trying. But, I agree 100%
