    &th and 10th Commandments

    According to Matt 5:27-28
'You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.'

This being the case then why is the 7th and 10th Commandments the same? This cannot be correct and there must be another meaning which has been left out of Bible translations.

I personally think that the 7th Commandment was God's command to the Israelites not to mix racially with non-Israelites. This would give the word 'adultery' the true meaning like 'adulterate, 'adulteration' and 'adulterated' all of which have nothing to do marital infidelity but the weakening of a pure substance with an inferior substance .

Why do you think this? Do you think this is sustainable if we take a concordance and look at the way the word is used?

Or Jesus applied a meaning to the commandment that had not previously been used.
"For a small moment have I forsaken you, and with great mercy will I gather you. With a little wrath did I hide My countenance for a moment from you, and with everlasting kindness will I have compassion on you," said your Redeemer, the Lord."..."For the mountains shall depart and the hills totter, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace totter," says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum.

I would just like to comment on that which I made bold.

The 7th Commandment addresses adultery in marriage. The Israelite was a nation from the flesh (Abraham and Sarah) via Isaac. Their inheritance was a piece of Land. Their blessings were in connection with life as we know it. That is, the blessings of God to an Israelite were health, wealth, long life, safety from their enemies, and no miscarriages of their children and animals. And the Law was no different. It addressed the FLESH. So Romans 8:3 says; "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh". See also Romans 3:20 and 7:5-11. Thus, the Commandment not commit adultery addressed the "adulteration" of the fleshly union of marriage. This is doubly confirmed by our Lord connecting this commandment with a woman in Matthew 5:27-28.

What the Lord did when He addressed the fleshly act of adultery versus the inner lust, was to show that a New Economy was being presented. The Jew was to discipline his flesh. The disciples of Christ were to HAVE A CHANGE OF NATURE. The New Birth infused a man with the divine life and nature (2nd Pet.1:3-4). And it was this divine life that should produce OTHER TENDENCIES in man. Fallen man ALWAYS tends to desire other men's wives. But under Law he was commended when he disciplined himself not to TOUCH. The New Life in Christ, when given free rein, has the power to discipline man's thoughts and tendencies. But it is a vicious, unending battle says Galatians 5:17. "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

The Laws prohibiting marriage with the Canaanites are another set of Laws.

Yes, that is how Jews see it. The act of adultery. Not intent, not daydreaming, but the actual, physical act is what's being outlawed here. The command not to covet is something else.

I think Jesus was teaching transgression of the law begins in our minds, in our hearts.
