Ben Shapiro, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spar after he offers $10,000 to debate her

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro challenged democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to a debate, offering to donate $10,000 to her campaign if she accepted -- but it triggered a sparring match online.
Shapiro initially tweeted a video on Wednesday in which he mocked Democratic National Committee chairperson Tom Perez for calling Ocasio-Cortez, a New York congressional candidate, the “future of the Democratic Party,” before issuing his challenge.

“Miss Ocasio-Cortez, I’m really excited that you’ve been elevated to that position and I would love to have a real conversation with you about the issues. You’ve noted that you think Republicans are afraid to debate you or talk to you or discuss the issues with you,” Shapiro said.

“Not only am I eager to discuss the issues with you, I’m willing to offer $10,000 to your campaign, today, for you to come on our Sunday special,” he continued. “We can have an hour long conversation about all the topics under the sun, really probe your belief system.”

Shapiro said he would also debate Ocasio-Cortez for charity.
“However you want to do it, I am more than willing to talk to you,” Shapiro said. “Let’s make this happen.”

Shapiro, Daily Wire editor-in-chief, said that he wants to make “America a more civil and interesting place,” and feels a conversation with Ocasio-Cortez could do just that.

Thursday night, Ocasio-Cortez compared Shapiro's offer to "catcalling" on Twitter.
"Just like catcalling, I don’t owe a response to unsolicited requests from men with bad intentions," she wrote. "And also like catcalling, for some reason they feel entitled to one."

Shapiro responded: "Discussion and debate are not 'bad intentions.' Slandering someone as a sexist catcaller without reason or evidence does demonstrate cowardice and bad intent, however."

Ocasio-Cortez’s unanticipated victory over veteran Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary over Crowley's New York seat put her in a national spotlight earlier this year.

Ocasio-Cortez lit up social media on Wednesday night when she appeared on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time” and stumbled when discussing Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the House minority leader.
“This is painful. It’s Miss South Carolina on maps bad,” Shapiro tweeted in response to her interview.
Donald Trump Jr. captioned video of her interview with, “OMG this is insane and yet the liberal campaign to make her the rockstar face of the left will continue ... let’s face it, I guess they don’t have much else.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s talk with Cuomo isn’t her first media appearance to whip up criticism since her upset victory over Crowley. She has struggled to explain how many of her platforms -- such as Medicare for all and a federal jobs guarantee -- would be funded.

Still, she has emerged as a liberal darling since bursting onto the scene – though not everyone is a fan.

Comedian Lewis Black, who also considers himself a socialist, told The Daily Beast in a recent interview that Ocasio-Cortez isn't the answer.

“The one thing I’ve learned in my lifetime is that we’ve got to get to the middle before we start pushing things in other directions. We’ve gotta get to the middle, and they have to sit down and decide how to do things,” Black said when asked if Ocasio-Cortez provides a “glimmer of hope.”

Shapiro not only answered the challenge he was willing to pay for the opportunity. Ocasio-Cortez is all fluff and no substance which is easily seen from interviews she's been involved with.
I find it hilarious that after claiming that Republicans won't debate or discuss issues with her she would run from the chance to promote the issues she supposedly feels so strongly about.

My take? Shapiro would most likely have welcomed to opportunity to have a discussion/debate about the issues. The fact that she initially laid down the challenge and then she refused to have a discussion/debate proves that she knows her policies and stances won't hold up under scrutiny and she would be proven for the fraud that she is.

Because I have doubts that she believes in them herself. She seems to be nothing more than a political opportunist who jumped on the Socialist bandwagon and wants to ride it as far as she can.

It's a predictable leftist response. When challenged to a policy debate, their reply is usually in the form of slander, ad homonyms and character assassination.

She's an idiot. But she'll get elected anyway because she's running in a safe D district.
"For a small moment have I forsaken you, and with great mercy will I gather you. With a little wrath did I hide My countenance for a moment from you, and with everlasting kindness will I have compassion on you," said your Redeemer, the Lord."..."For the mountains shall depart and the hills totter, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace totter," says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.

Candace Owens doubled the offer to charity to debate Cortez.

No response. I suppose she's catcalling also?

Ugh why must the Dems be so spineless. Every day I feel more like I should just run myself, because they have winning messages that they just refuse to utilize and I don't understand why. It's ridiculous that you have to hear from Europeans to have a real discussion on socialism.

    That's interesting.

Would you care to list the winning messages? I'd perfectly understand if you wouldn't want to.

here's your chance - what's the winning message?

My mom grew up under socialism in Europe and my uncle was a communist, so I know a few things.....

On environment, immigration, education, foreign policy, voting rights, energy, internet, political regulation (allegedly) they have strong ideals. DemSocs are in a position where they can explore the limits of the left and yet they choose to just be angsty Democrats.

Absolutely - those are the narratives they should run on. And be able to provide realistic answers (unlike Cortez who has been fact checked as in total ignorance on virtually every soft-ball question asked)

Maybe your could provide some details to the winning message of each topic?

Frankly the Republican and Libertarian answer is something along the lines of "we'll cross that bridge later," which is just silly unless we can move entire cities inland when the next major hurricane is spotted. Environmental issues are really only addressed by the Dems, which just enables their financial recklessness. So I would like to hear more suggestions from the right that don't involve the word "hoax."

    Immigration?
Open borders fill job vacancies that Americans aren't willing to take, yet are necessary for the nation to be self-sufficient. That bad people exist in the world is not a convincing argument for me. Regardless, the US majority is pro-immigration, so the left has no excuse fumbling this issue. Amnesty for non-violent offenders, simplified pathway(s) to citizenship, no immediate family or guardian separation, vetting for refugees free from racial or religious discrimination. No-brainers.

    Education?
Ambitiously reduce state tuitions, provide relief for college loans and discharge them with bankruptcy, increase public school funding so teachers can focus on teaching instead of working 3 jobs, continue exploring curriculum that brings us back on pace with the rest of the world. The level of centralization this needs is a more involved question.

    Foreign Policy?
No one is consistent, honestly, but both parties are right of center. Non-intervention unless directly threatened appeals to the majority of Americans. Cortez could have stuck her flag here easily unless she is one of those "disband NATO" people. The mainline Dems did a poor job, and Repubs did even worse.

    Voting rights?
Make it easier, not harder, for low-income and minorities to vote. Citizens should be automatically registered. End gerrymandering and partisans closing voting locations strategically. Create a national holiday for presidential elections.

    Energy?
Invest in clean and renewables, incentivize competition with Europe, regulate waste disposal.

    Internet?
I was thinking along the lines of net neutrality.

Can you provide statistics regarding teachers holding three jobs?

A quick search is indicating about 10% hold a second job, but I couldn’t dig deeper to see if those were temporary summer jobs.

Also the UI rate is under 4.7% in the general population less than 4.9% work more than one job. I think the ‘migrant worker will do jobs Americans won’t’ narrative is red herring.

But I support LEGAL migrant workers and I think the GOP does also. Why do we need open borders to accomplish that?

So yeah, the policies should be out front and debated and vetted for accuracy also.

I still don’t understand the college thing. I paid for mine with a part time job and a very small stipend from the GI Bill. I guaduated with no college debt. Not sure why college is so expensive....but I’m sure there can be solutions to the astronomical cost of college

She will never debate Ben for any amount of money. He would eat her lunch.

Hyperbole. Contro has a thread about this, my point is clearer there.

Here's a case where the GOP's position is simply Democrat-Lite, and so have the weaker argument. The better question is why should we deport immigrants whose only offense is undocumented labor? I would have loved to see how Shapiro navigated over that mountain.

I wish I was just a few years younger, I could be getting on my feet without getting hit square in the face by a recession, lol. Actually I think the root of the problem is that a college degree today is the equivalent of a high-school diploma 40 years ago. So it is basically a necessity for everyone and the system didn't have the framework to accommodate everyone. But also I think a lot - a lot - of the tuition money goes towards wasteful and expensive things.

I really do wish people of your caliber would run for office. For any side. I remember when I used to vote for the person, not the party.

I graduated HS in 1974. I think I was pretty well prepared, although my SR year seemed to be a waste of time. Of course I had a job (electrical apprentence) by then and I had work release........
