I think the KEy to understand the Mark is found with this:

A DEVOUT Jew would literally have a portion of scripture written and tied in a box on their hands and have a box on their foreheads.
The Beast will mimic this idea, that everyone can see that a person is DEVOTED to the Beast. This means it will be visible. The idea behind this is of course that then this will affect what we think and do. So there is truth in both points.
